Low prices for fixer-uppers
Reasonable prices are one draw for Fayette homebuyers, who can find properties that need some love for about $65,000 to $70,000, while move-in ready, three-bedroom homes may go for under $200,000. On the higher end, three-to-five-bedroom houses on several acres cost around $600,000. Some residents enjoy tree-lined sidewalks on their afternoon stroll down residential streets. Along the way, they might pass by ranch-style and American Foursquare properties. Houses here tend to be older construction, some dating back 100 years.142 acres of recreation at Harrison Lake
Harrison Lake State Park draws residents and vacationers with 142 acres of swimming, fishing, paddling, picnicking, hiking and camping opportunities. Visitors bring their canine companions for camping weekends and let them take a dip in the designated dog swim area near the campgrounds. Outdoor lovers will find something to do all year round, with sledding at the east end of the lake, cross-country skiing and ice fishing in the winter.High marks, small class sizes in Fayette
Fayette’s younger residents attend highly rated schools, including Fayette Elementary, Junior High and Senior High Schools. All three schools are located in the Fayette Local Schools building, and each earn a B grade from Niche.com. With a 6-1 student-teacher ratio for the district, Fayette students benefit from smaller-than-average class sizes. “They’re schools where you get more individual attention because of the smaller numbers,” says Stambauth, who has lived in Fayette for over 40 years.Opera house and arts festival entertain
Residents enjoy an evening out at the centrally located Fayette Opera House, which hosts tribute artists, country artists, reed organ artists, movies, magicians and more. The Opera House, which opened its doors in 1889, used to house the jail and the fire department on the first floor and community events on the second floor. In 1978, the Fayette Community Fine Arts Council began efforts to renovate the structure and return it to a community and cultural center, which it is today. Normal Grove Community Park hosts the Royal Bull Thistle Arts Festival on the first Saturday of August every year. Going for over 40 years strong, the event is a big deal, Myers says. “They have a fireworks show, and a lot of people people camp at Harrison Lake State Park during the festival,” he adds. “It draws a big crowd.”Locals flock to Freddy’s and One More for taco night
Louie’s Pizza Shop is a Fayette favorite for pizza, burgers, ice cream and more. Freddy’s Place Bar and Grille and One More Bar and Grill also serve American fare and weekly specials. “Both Freddy’s and One More do a taco night that is pretty highly regarded,” says Bryan Stambauth, an administrator for the village of Fayette. Locals have access to groceries and other essentials at Fayette Supermarket. They can travel to nearby Archbold or Wauseon for a wider selection of shopping options.
