Sprawling suburban neighborhood in western Fayetteville

Seventy-First is a suburban Fayetteville neighborhood about 8 miles from downtown and 10 miles south of Fort Bragg. One of the biggest military installations in the world, Fort Bragg spans 163,000 acres and employs 55,000 military personnel. However, Seventy-First’s military history began long before the base’s founding: the neighborhood was named after the 71st Regiment of the British Army, which formed in 1758 and was made up of Scottish immigrants. Today, as military members and families move in and out of Fayetteville, the housing market experiences regular turnover. Seventy-First homeowners have quick access to Interstate 295 and the shopping centers along U.S. Route 401. “Homes are relatively new out there. And the neighborhood has a better high school in terms of sports programs compared to South View High School and Douglas Byrd High School,” says Barbara Evans, a broker at eXp Realty who sells in the neighborhood.

Homes under $500,000 with tidy lawns

The flat, enclosed streets of Seventy-First are suitable for bike riding and dog walking. However, the sprawling nature of the neighborhood and its lack of sidewalks make it car-dependent. Properties sit on level, grassy lots, and home styles include New Traditional, newly built constructions and 20th-century ranch-style homes. Prices range from about $90,000 to $560,000, depending on square footage and age. Condos and townhouses range from about $170,000 to $250,000. Nearly half of residents are renters.

Main roads connect Seventy-First to the city and beyond

Interstate 295 runs through the middle of the neighborhood, looping around Fayetteville and connecting to Interstate 95, the East Coast’s primary north-south highway. U.S. Route 401 runs east-west through Seventy-First and leads to downtown Fayetteville's pedestrian-friendly shopping and dining district. “If moving from a big city, it’ll feel like Fayetteville has no traffic problems,” Evans says. “We have a little touch of 5 p.m. traffic, but nothing compared to what I’ve been through in south Florida, which is horrible.” Fayetteville Area System of Transit (FAST) buses take passengers throughout the city. Fayetteville Regional Airport is about 10 miles away. Seventy-First is between Hoke Hospital and Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, about 6 miles from each.

Picnickers and kayakers can stop and admire the geese and ducks swimming around the water lilies that bloom in early summer. Indoor recreation facilities like Urban Air Trampoline and Adventure Park and Round-A-Bout Skating Center host parties and offer open sessions for jumping and skating, respectively.

Shopping and good eats along U.S. Route 401

Fuller’s Old Fashioned BBQ—a beloved local chain with more than 3,000 reviews—has a location along U.S. Route 401. Here, soul food lovers can find buffet-style fried chicken, hush puppies and, of course, barbecue. Juicy Crab, another highly rated local joint, is known for its Cajun-style seafood boil. Both restaurants are in Westside Village Shopping Center, which is anchored by Walmart Supercenter. More shopping and dining options lie further up U.S. Route 401 at Fayetteville Pavilion, like Food Lion, Buffalo Wild Wings and Marshalls.
