Federalsburg is a rural Eastern Shore town
The historic township of Federalsburg has gone from a 19th-century trading post to a quaint rural village with various outdoor activities for locals to enjoy. Marshyhope Creek runs through the center of town and once served as a port of call for steamships hauling lumber and other goods to the Nanticoke River. Today, residents head to the creek and paddle in kayaks or fish for bass from public parks. "It's a nice little town, and it's been growing; there have been new-construction homes coming in there on some of the undeveloped lots," says Ronald Molock, a real estate agent with Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc., with 18 years of experience serving the Eastern Shore. Federalsburg is less than an hour from Salisbury for flights or work commutes, and the Delaware state line is four miles east, so residents can reach cities like Seaford in minutes for shopping and dining needs.
Locals fish and kayak on Marshyhope Creek
Federalsburg Marina and Recreation Park has a playground, picnic shelters, and a boat launch for kayaks and canoes. It's also a popular spot for locals to catch largemouth bass and blue catfish from the creek. Chambers Park often hosts youth league games on the baseball and football fields. Folks can visit the Federalsburg Museum to explore exhibits and artifacts that detail the town's long history as a trading hub on the Eastern Shore. Idylwild Natural Area is a forested wildlife management area north of town that spans 3,800 acres. There, visitors can hike along wooded trails or hunt white-tailed deer and squirrels during appropriate seasons.
Old and new single-family homes on country roads
Home styles include Colonial Revivals, Cape Cods, newly built ramblers and bungalows with open porches. They are often set on modest lots beside narrow, small-town streets or farther away from town on winding country roads. Prices range from $80,000 to $400,000, depending on age, square footage, and remodel status. There are also acre-sized lots on the market occasionally, often zoned for agricultural or residential use.
Federalsburg Elementary offers health services
Caroline County Public Schools serves Federalsburg and earns a C-plus from Niche. Students can attend Federalsburg Elementary School and Colonel Richardson Middle School, which both get B-minus ratings, while Colonel Richardson High School gets a B. Federalsburg Elementary offers a School-Based Health Center, available for student medical, behavioral and dental appointments in the summer and staffed by practitioners at Choptank Community Health System, Inc. Union United Methodist Church is also in the community and hosts Union Preschool Daycare for early child development and supervision.
Restaurants in town and retailers in Seaford
Federalsburg Family Restaurant is a local diner along Bloomington Avenue that offers burgers, wraps and subs. There's also a Food Lion along Hayman Drive for groceries. Residents can head to Seaford, 11 miles east in Delaware, to shop at Lowe's, Walmart and other retailers.
Close to Salisbury and Delaware
Salisbury is a 32-mile drive south on Maryland Route 313, which takes around 40 minutes, depending on traffic. The city is also home to Salisbury Regional Airport, a major Eastern Shore travel hub, and the nearest hospital is the TidalHealth Mears Campus in Delaware, 12 miles east. Locals often commute around town to agricultural or manufacturing roles. "It's a few farming jobs around here and a lot of manufacturing work, like Solo Cup and M&M Refrigeration, says Molock. "There are also major routes to get around."
