Just 15 miles west of downtown St. Louis, Ferguson is resilient. “Ferguson is very community-based,” says resident Georgia Rossel, a broker with Alexander Realty. “When anything happens, they just come out in full force. Two tornadoes have rolled through Ferguson in the past 15 years, but it’s incredible to see how the community comes together and helps out.” Nicknamed the Good Friday Tornadoes, five tornadoes touched down in Saint Louis in 2011, including Ferguson. Another cut through the city in 2013, Later, in 2014, Ferguson received national attention after the death of Michael Brown. “That really put a stigma over Ferguson that has been kind of difficult to come behind,” says Casey Milton of Worth Clark Realty. “The community was unfairly penalized for what happened.” Today, Ferguson is home to almost 18,000 people. Major employers like Emerson Electric, St. Louis Lambert International Airport and the University of Missouri–St. Louis bring people to the area for work.

Foursquares, Cape Cods and ranch-style homes
Ferguson’s median house price is $110,000, which is below the national median. Across the city, people can find a mix of housing styles, from Victorian Nationals and American Foursquares dating back to the early twentieth century to Cape Cods and ranch-style homes built in the 40s and 50s. The Ferguson government also offers reimbursement projects to encourage property care and beautification. “Ferguson used to be a Tree City USA until the tornado hit and we lost a lot of the trees,” Rossel says. “We have a tree program that helps people clear out the dead trees and branches from that.” Another program reimburses a portion of the funds people put into exterior repairs and maintenance on their homes.
While property crime has been slowly decreasing since the early 2000s, Ferguson’s violent crime rates have been steadily increasing over the past 20 years. Both property and violent crime rates are higher than the national and state rates.
