Ferguson residents passionate about their neighborhood
Ferguson has many things homebuyers desire, with traditional and spacious homes just 12 miles from downtown St. Louis. Some might expect prospective homebuyers would be drawn to Ferguson’s doorstep. That has not always been the case, as the much of the resistance the community faces stems from the death of Michael Brown in 2014. “When the Michael Brown situation happened, that really put a stigma over Ferguson that has been kind of difficult to come behind,” says Casey Milton, a Realtor with Keller Williams Marquee, a self-described fan and defender of Ferguson who sells homes here. “It’s associated with everything negative. The community was unfairly penalized for what happened.” In 2014, Ferguson became the flash point for nights of civil unrest that played out on national news outlets and sparked protests nationwide. In the aftermath, some would-be buyers might overlook all Ferguson has to offer. “I get a lot of people who this is their first time buying a home and their budget doesn’t go higher than $150,000. Here you can find a great space for that, plus proximity to highways,” Milton says.
Brick homes fill Ferguson
Ferguson is a community that has been around a long time. And its homes have all of the appeal of homes built in the mid and early part of the last century, as well as some of the drawbacks. There's not much new construction. “You are going get Victorians, some Bungalows, some Craftsman-style home. A lot of homes are all brick,” Milton says. “They’re beautiful homes. They’re traditional-looking homes. They are on larger lots, which a lot of people don’t get nowadays.”
And in many instances, they are good deals. The median price for a single-family home in Ferguson is about $100,000, with most homes selling from $75,000 to about $140,000. “My 21-year-old daughter just bought a property in Ferguson. She just bought it for $114,000. It just appraised for 140,000. She has a huge backyard, a two-car garage, and 3 bedroom two bathroom home. It is difficult to get all of that at a reasonable price point that’s livable today. Her home anywhere else would be at least $175,000.

January-Wabash Park amenities include a swimming pool
When it comes to parks, Ferguson has hit the mother lode in January-Wabash Park. The sprawling outdoor green space has a lake stocked with fish for catch-and-release fishing. There’s a walking trail that surrounds the lake, a newly remodeled playground for kids and a swimming pool that only permits Ferguson residents to swim. “A lot of people don’t know about that piece. But when I do introduce them to Ferguson, that’s a very popular piece to know. Your ride past this beautiful park and lake and you see people there just having a good time,” Milton says.
