Forest Highlands
Neighborhood in Flagstaff, Arizona
Coconino County 86001
Golfing, hiking and swimming
In the neighborhood’s southwestern end, the 1,100-acre Forest Highland Golf Club offers two 18-hole golf courses, named Meadow and Canyon. The Meadow course features some challenging elevation shifts and trickling streams, while the Canyon course – named for its rolling landscape – is covered with groves of pine trees; both share views of the San Francisco Peaks. The club's roughly 4-mile rocky path is popular with hikers and mountain bikers, and members can also enjoy pickleball courts, a fitness center, two swimming pools and a kids’ splash pad. Parents can also take advantage of the club’s childcare services.Golf club restaurants and grocery stores outside of the neighborhood
Each golf course has its own clubhouse, each with its own snack bar and a restaurant serving lunch and dinner; themed menus might include tacos, pasta or burgers. Other restaurants sit north of the interchange of Interstates 40 and 17, like local chain Cafe Rio Mexican Grill, a counter-serve eatery offering tortilla soup and shredded chicken tacos. The closest shopping is 7 miles north, including grocery stores like the family-owned Bashas’ and a Sprouts Farmers Market, and big-box stores like Walmart and Target. Department stores like JCPenney can be found 13 miles northeast at the Flagstaff Mall.Custom-built homes among the pines
Narrow cul-de-sacs are ringed by new traditional split-level homes that were custom-built between the late 1980s and early 2000s. Set amid towering pine trees, these homes tend to be 3,000 to 5,000 square feet, featuring earth-toned wood siding, steeply pitched roofs and floor-to-ceiling windows that invite nature inside; elk and deer might be spotted trotting through front and back yards. Most homes here have three bedrooms on lots of up to a half-acre, and typically range from $1.1 million to $2.5 million, though five-bedroom properties on 1-acre lots with up to 5-car garages, private spas and in-floor heating can sell for $2.7 million to $3.65 million. Buyers might also find parcels of land ranging in price from $250,000 to $1.75 million. Forest Highlands homebuyers are required to purchase a community membership, which includes a one-time payment of just over $100,000, transfer fees of about $6,500 and monthly dues of about $1,400. Non-residents can purchase a special membership with the one-time payment and monthly fees, but no transfer fees; under this plan, though, they must purchase a home here within two years.Nearby interstates, golf cart friendly streets and bike paths
Interstates 40 and 17 are within 6 miles north, while Historic Route 66 is found 16 miles northeast. Highway 89A leads about 9 miles north to downtown Flagstaff, and 25 miles south to Sedona. Residents here can ride golf carts or walk along neighborhood streets, but are car-dependent when traveling beyond the gates. Unpaved bike paths weave throughout the community's western end, while residents can hike local nature trails 4 miles west to Fort Tuthill, the county fairgrounds. Flagstaff Medical Center and Flagstaff Pulliam Airport are found within 10 miles northeast.Foreign languages at Flagstaff Unified district schools
Local kids may attend Flagstaff Unified district schools, including Manuel Demiguel Elementary, which earns an A-minus from Niche, and Mount Elden Middle, which earns a B. At the B-plus-rated Flagstaff High, students can take up to three Spanish or Navajo language classes, along with an AP Spanish language and culture class, and one dedicated to Diné (what the Navajo people call themselves) history and government.
