Lynwood
Outdoor sports, trails and museum learning
The 14-acre Cheshire Park is about a mile east of the neighborhood, offering mountain views from its tennis court, playground and two basketball courts; the picnic area here is shaded by a ramada— in Arizona, this is a shelter with a roof but no walls— and there's a mile-long, gravel-paved section of the 56-mile, city-wide Flagstaff Urban Trails System. Further east, the Karen Cooper Trail passes through about 4 miles of wetlands and oak thickets, ending downtown at Wheeler Park. The Museum of Northern Arizona sits about 2 miles east, offering lectures for adults, and museum scavenger hunts and summer camps for kids. Eleven miles north, the Arizona Snowbowl resort offers scenic lift rides in summer, and almost 800 acres' worth of ski runs in winter.Custom-built homes on mostly walkable streets
Lynwood's custom-built homes date from the late-1990s and early-2000s, and are set along narrow, curving roads lined with ponderosa pine trees. Set back at the end of long driveways and surrounded by thick groves of pines, these homes sit on lots of between 1 and 3 acres, with plenty of space between neighbors. Layouts tend to be about 3,000 to 6,000 square feet, with four or five bedrooms; many homes feature Craftsman-style details like earth-tone wood-panel siding, cross-gabled roofs and front porches shaded by overhanging eaves, but some are styled like A-frame log cabins, with tall picture windows, stone-paved chimneys and backyard decks. Home prices typically range from $1.2 million to $1.9 million, depending on the size of the home and its lot. Not all residential streets here have sidewalks, but Bauer says it’s still considered a pretty walkable and bikeable community. Residents here have to join the neighborhood’s homeowners association, which charges $20 per month, and encourages spring cleanups of fire fuels, like pine needles, to help prevent the spread of wildfires; the nearest fire station is 2 miles north.Explore Santa’s workshop at the Little America Hotel
Every year from mid-November through Christmas Eve, the Little America Hotel, which is 6 miles southeast, hosts The North Pole Experience. Voted “Best Holiday Experience for Children” by Arizona Foothills Magazine from 2016 through 2024, this roughly 2-hour event features a trolley ride through Santa’s workshop, where kids can build toys with elves, enjoy Mrs. Claus’ baked goods, earn an Honorary Elf diploma from the Elf University and create a wish list in the North Pole Mail Room. Everyone can glimpse the famous flying reindeer here after exploring the ins and outs of his sleigh, and take pictures with Santa, who gifts a teddy bear to every kid before they leave.Nearby pizza joint, downtown barbecue and southeastern shops
Locals can get gas and snacks at the Peak View Country Store, found about a mile northeast along Fort Valley Road, but for groceries, they tend to head a few miles away to either Safeway or the family-owned Bashas’. The Flagstaff Mall is about 8 miles east, with department stores like Dillard’s and JCPenney. Three miles southeast of the neighborhood, family owned Fratelli Pizza has been a local favorite since 2006 for its wood-fired pies; the owners donate 10 percent of each Tuesday's sales to area youth organizations. In Downtown Flagstaff, the Bigfoot BBQ is located in the basement of the Old Town Shops, with Kansas-style offerings like pulled pork or andouille sausage topped with beef.Navajo language classes at Flagstaff High School
Local kids may attend Flagstaff Unified district schools, including Sechrist Elementary, which earns a B-plus from Niche, and Mount Elden Middle, which earns a B-minus. At the B-rated Flagstaff High, students can take up to three Spanish or Navajo language classes, or two AP Spanish language and culture classes, with one dedicated to the history and government of the Diné (what the Navajo people call themselves). Two interstates, nearby bus stops and bike lanes
Interstate 40 sits roughly 8 miles east and Interstate 17 is found about 7 miles south; Historic Route 66 is 5 miles south. North Freemont Boulevard, the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, connects to Fort Valley Road (Highway 180) less than a mile north, and leads about 5 miles south to Downtown Flagstaff. Mountain Line Public Transit buses make stops just east of the neighborhood, and Amtrak trains depart from the Visitors Center station downtown. Lynwood has several designated bike lanes, and a mile-long, dirt-packed portion of the Flagstaff Urban Trails System runs along Fort Valley Road. Flagstaff Medical Center sits about 4 miles southeast, while Flagstaff Pulliam Airport is roughly 11 miles south.
