Flemington is a quiet borough with experiences close by

Before Flemington became a borough of Raritan Township, it was a rural settlement full of Dutch and German farmers. The borough was named after resident, farmer and tavern owner Samuel Fleming, whose 18th-century home is now a local history museum. Today, Flemington is known for its historic buildings, access to popular retail spots and highly rated schools.

“Flemington was originally known as Raritan Township," says Beverly Yoson, a Realtor at Coldwell Banker Realty with over 10 years of experience. "It became separate from Raritan Township and was incorporated in 1910. Today, it's still known as Flemington Borough in Hunterdon County. There’s the Flemington borough, and then the area around it is Raritan Township, and they share the same zip code of 08822. The borough is a diverse area, with lots of different cultural activities. On Main Street, you'll find a variety of different diverse restaurants, along with antique shops, exercise studios and charming retail stores."

Older homes under $700,000

Yoson says Flemington has a mix of condos, townhouses, single-family homes, rentals and commercial properties. Many of the townhouses and condos were built around the 1980s and often sell for $350,000 to $455,000. Most homes have Craftsman, Colonial Revival or ranch-style designs, and prices range between $355,000 and $635,000. Older homes don’t have attached garages, so residents park on paved driveways alongside their homes or on the side of the street.

The Flemington-Raritan Regional School District serves the area and earns a B from Niche. Students start at the B-rated Robert Hunter Elementary School before transferring to Reading-Fleming Intermediate School, which gets a B-minus. The final step is the A-rated Hunterdon Central Regional High School, which Niche ranks as the best public high school in Hunterdon County. Hunterdon Central offers magnet programs, allowing students to apply to specialized academies that focus on topics like biomedical science and architectural design.

Restaurants and stores are close to home

Residents are a short drive from popular shops and restaurants. Yoson says Stangl Road is lined with local businesses. Yoson points out Matt’s Red Rooster Grill, known for its bring-your-own-bottle policy and surf and turf dishes. Mi Sabor is popular for its authentic Mexican food. The Shoppes at Flemington is a retail center on Reville Avenue, and it features stores like HomeGoods, Ulta and LOFT. Across the street, the Flemington Circle Shopping Center has a large ShopRite and Basil Bandwagon Natural Market. The Dutch County Farmers Market is open Thursdays through Saturdays, and vendors sell farm-fresh products and homemade treats.

Walkable parks and celebrating Flemington’s agriculture

When residents need fresh air, they can walk the red brick paved trails at Flemington Borough Park. The nearby Mine Brook Park also has a walking trail that circles a playground and baseball field. The weather in Flemington can drop into the 20s during the winter, but residents can stay warm and attend free events at Flemington Borough Library, which is currently under renovation.

One of the borough’s biggest annual events is the Corn, Tomato and Beer Festival, which celebrates Flemington’s status as the nation’s corn and tomato capital. Yoson says the event is centered around art shows, craft breweries and vendors. Food trucks and vendor tables line Stangl Road, and visitors can try locally crafted brews, fresh baked goods and dishes featuring fresh tomatoes or sweet corn.

Easy trips to NYC and transportation destinations

U.S. Route 202 is south of the neighborhood, and most commuters take the highway to drive into Pennsylvania or to New York City. “People commute all over,” Yoson says. “A lot of people moved here from New York during COVID. They can work from home, and they might only have to commute one or two days.” Flemington is about 20 miles from Princeton and 56 miles from NYC by car. Route 31 leads up to Hunterdon Medical Center. The town is about 20 miles from the Trenton-Mercer Airport, where travelers can fly to East Coast destinations like Atlanta or Orlando, Florida.

There are churches throughout the area, including St. Magdalen Roman Catholic Church, which was established in 1847. The Flemington Jewish Community Center is about a mile from town.

The “Trial of the Century” was held in Flemington

In the 1930s, Bruno Hauptmann was tried and convicted in Flemington for kidnapping 20-month-old Charles Lindbergh, Jr. The six-week event was dubbed “The Trial of the Century” when it happened in 1938 at what is now the Hunterdon County Historic Court House. The courthouse is a museum with preserved rooms and relics from the trial. The Union Hotel across the street was where attorneys, reporters and curious spectators stayed. The hotel is currently under renovation, and current plans include a new restaurant on the first floor, hotel rooms and residential units.
