An expanding Henderson County town

Fletcher offers a suburban feel in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, about 13 miles south of Asheville. “It’s a great community with a lot of families, yet retirees like it here too,” says owner/broker Dolly Moore with Home Selling Service, LLC, who has lived and sold homes here since 2006. “I’ve never heard a negative word about it — people are proud of the town and the lives that they have here.”

Many of the town’s nearly 8,000 residents work in health care and education, with top employers including the Margaret Pardee Memorial Hospital and surrounding public school districts. Fletcher continues to grow as more buyers discover lower housing costs and quieter neighborhoods – compared to nearby cities.

As the area continues to grow, more townhouses, condos and duplexes are popping up on the market. The overall median price sits at about $460,000, which is slightly higher than the U.S. median, and homes with mountain views and expansive lots may exceed $1 million.

Bill Moore Community Park’s amenities accommodate all ages

Henderson County is known for outdoor recreation, from hiking trails to canyoneering and waterfall repelling. Residents can quickly access the Appalachian and Blue Ridge mountains, and the French Broad River is popular for whitewater rafting. Fletcher has the Bill Moore Community Park, where visitors can walk the trails along Cane Creek, play pickleball or climb on the playground equipment. The nearby courses at the Chestnut Mountain Golf Club and Broadmoor Golf Links have public tee times and membership options.

Minutes from the Asheville Regional Airport

Most people get around by car in Fletcher, and U.S. Route 25 cuts right through town. Interstate 26 runs north to Asheville and southwest all the way to Charleston. “It takes about 15 minutes to get to Asheville, maybe 20 at most,” Moore says. Apple Country Public Transit buses also stop throughout the area on busier roads. Homes in Fletcher sit within 5 miles of the Asheville Regional Airport, which offers direct services to large U.S. cities via major commercial airlines. Residents can also access medical care within 5 miles at the AdventHealth Hendersonville hospital or Mission Hospital, about 11 miles north.

Smiley’s Flea Market and the Feed & Seed venue

Asheville is home to the hip River Arts District (RAD) and the iconic Biltmore Estate and Gardens. Downtown Asheville is also a hotspot for live music, art studios and a dynamic restaurant scene. However, Fletcher offers many of its own activities. Smiley’s Flea Market is the largest in the state. Open sunup to sundown on the weekends, it has hundreds of vendors, along with concession stands and a carousel. Feed & Seed is another unique attraction that triples as a community space, church and bluegrass music venue.

Relatively low crime rates and mountain weather

According to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, in 2023 Fletcher accounted for only 9% of the total crime index in Henderson County.

Fletcher experiences all four seasons. The mountain air keeps summers slightly cooler than other North Carolina regions, and the annual winter snowfall is 11 inches. The town is susceptible to flooding and continues to recover from Hurricane Helene damage in 2024. “Fortunately, Fletcher wasn’t hit too hard,” Moore says. “The Bill Moore Community Park was badly flooded, as well as our industrial park, but both are slowly coming back to business.”
