An improving neighborhood named for a local philanthropist
Potter Longway is a primarily residential neighborhood in east Flint, with modestly sized homes and relatively low prices. "I'd call it the east of the east side. That particular area has really shown some improvement in livability and value in the last few years. People consider it a nice neighborhood," says Layne Lucia, broker/owner of Lucia Properties. Potter Longway is north of Robert T. Longway Boulevard, named for a local, who, in the 1950s and '60s, was active in community service and philanthropy. A park and a planetarium at Flint's Cultural Center are also named for Longway. Potter Elementary School is also in the neighborhood. Several miles southwest are downtown Flint and the Flint River. Interstate 69 is to the south, and Interstate 475 is to the west.
Main roads in Potter Longway feature well-maintained sidewalks set back from the road.

Modestly sized homes often marketed to first-time homebuyers
A neighborhood of gridded streets with sidewalks and trees set a bit back, Potter Longway has evenly spaced lots, and most have driveways and garages. Among the home types are 20th-century bungalows and ranch-style homes. "The majority of homes were built between 1925 and 1950, but there are some that are newer and there are some that are older. What happens is people are buying and fixing them up and living there," Lucia says.
Many are under 1,000 square feet and considered starter or first-time-buyer homes. Prices range from about $11,000 for a one-bedroom under 600 square feet to $150,000 for a three-bedroom home more than twice the size. "It's an affordable and stabilized area. The properties in the city of Flint tend to be a little lower," Lucia says, making a comparison to those in Burton, an adjacent city to the south.
Many of Potter Longway's ranch homes sit on long narrow lots with sizable fenced-in yards.

Longway Park, next to the elementary school, has open fields that the Flint Rogues Rugby Football Club uses for home games. The Potter Longway Neighborhood Association has organized cleanups and other events at the park. The Kearsley Lake Golf Course, a municipal course, is to the north.
A few miles to the east is the For-Mar Nature Preserve and Arboretum, which is about 380 acres with 7 miles of trails. Other features include a memorial garden, a treehouse and a butterfly house. In the winter, when there's at least 3 inches of snow, skiing and snowshoeing are allowed.
Longway Park's basketball court is the perfect spot for summer pickup games.
For-Mar Nature Preserve & Arboretum offers trails and a learning center for locals to explore.

Stores and restaurants to the north and south of the neighborhood
Richfield Road, on the neighborhood's north end, includes businesses like The Amazing Book-Store, a comic book shop. There's a Kroger on this side of the neighborhood; the opposite end has a Save A Lot. Grandma's Recipes is a restaurant with a sign advertising its "darn good food," available during breakfast, lunch or dinner. A few miles south, close to I-69, is the Courtland Center mall, chain restaurants, B's Bowling and various shopping centers. The Flint Farmers' Market is held three days a week, all year, downtown. Events include the Flint Handmade Spring Craft Market in April, Pavilion Opening Day in May and the Christmas in July Night Market.

Filtering drinking water is still recommended
In 2014, the city was at the height of the lead contamination water crisis. Though the Environmental Protection Agency said the water was safe in 2018, it's still recommended that a filter be used for drinking water.
