The peanut capital of Texas
30 miles southeast of San Antonio, the town of Floresville borders the San Antonio River. This small town is currently more rural than suburban, “but that could be changing as towns in this area are growing,” says Myrick, Outreach Librarian at Sam Fore, Jr. Wilson County Public Library in Floresville. “Each town in Wilson County has its own festival,” says Myrick. And Floresville’s peanut festival every October is why it’s known as the peanut capital of the state.
Small town dining and shopping in Wilson County
A taste of the south can be found at Fluff’s White House Café. It’s the place to go for chicken-fried steak in a down-home setting. There are several fast food restaurants in town as well, serving up everything from burgers to tacos. More family-owned and operated restaurants and shops are located in La Vernia, one of several other small towns located 15 minutes away. For a post-dinner movie, locals can head to the historic Arcadia Theatre. This 1920s theatre not only shows movies but has been featured in them. When it comes to food shopping, “All Wilson County towns have their own farmers markets,” says Meyrick. Floresville is also home to two supermarkets – H-E-B on 10th Street and a Walmart Supercenter at the northern edge of town.

Wilson County single-family homes
Floresville properties tend to have spacious front yards with plenty of room for holiday decorations or dogs to run around. Many streets do not have sidewalks, but homes are just blocks from the courthouse and city center. Home styles include brick ranch-styles with side-gabled roofs, Victorians and Greek Revivals. Some homes have built-in garages while others opt for the covered carport. A four-bedroom new construction costs about $300,000. Homes tend to fall between $200,000 and $320,000. Some lots are available starting at $43,000. Apartments start at $800 per month.
Parks near the San Antonio River
Floresville River Park borders the San Antonio River. Locals can go fishing or kayaking along the waterway. On land, there’s plenty of shaded green space, a swimming pool, a playground and “permanent StoryWalk installations at parks in the county,” says Myrick. Meandering through the city is the 2-mile El Camino Hike and Bike Trail, giving residents another option to enjoy time outdoors. Floresville also includes a skate park and dog park just off 6th Street. The River Bend Golf Club winds through the northern part of the community, offering a scenic alternative to private courses in the San Antonio area.

Quick commute to Floresville Independent School District schools
The full public school pipeline is in town as part of the Floresville Independent School District. South Elementary School gets a B-minus on Niche while Floresville Middle School gets a C-plus. Floresville High School, which offers an Air Force JROTC program, scores a B-minus on Niche.
Students can participate in athletics at Floresville High School.
Students can participate in a variety of clubs and activities, including sports, music, and art.

U.S. Route 181 goes right through town
Floresville is not particularly bikeable or walkable except between neighbors’ houses. With no bus routes in town, it is car-dependent. The closest hospital is Mission Trail Baptist Hospital 22 miles northwest. San Antonio International Airport is 37 miles away. With U.S. Route 181 going through the center of town and leading right to San Antonio, Floresville residents have a convenient way to commute to the city.
