Hooverson Heights
Suburban Neighborhood in Follansbee, West Virginia
Brooke County 26037
Ranch and Cape Cod homes line narrow and hilly dead-end streets
Ranch-style houses, bungalows and Cape Cods are the most common styles in the community. Still, split-level homes and raised ranches help accommodate the area's gentle hills. The neighborhood also has a small manufactured home community. Prices range between $65,000 and $260,000, depending on a home's condition and size. Grass lawns range from small to mid-sized. Driveways, back alleys and the occasional garage keep vehicles off the neighborhood's narrow roads. Many streets dead-end into the forests surrounding residential clusters. No Ohio River access, but Follansbee parks offer spots to play
The largest park near Hooverson Heights is Follansbee Park. Trees surround the park's playground, community house and seasonal swimming pool. Softball and baseball fields are available around the corner. "It's a pretty nice park for a town our size," Casini says. Mahan Park has a more urban setting, but gated basketball courts, play spaces and picnic areas keep kids away from street traffic. Small neighborhood parks like Jefferson Park have at least a small playground shaded by trees. Over by Brooke High School, crowds gather at Brooke Memorial Stadium to watch fall football. Although the neighborhood is near the Ohio River, residents drive about 6 miles south into Wellsburg to launch boats onto the water. "We're like 15 feet above water level, so there's no public access to the river," Casini says. "It's all mostly industrial along the water."Students attend Brooke County schools in and around the neighborhood
Students may start at Hooverson Heights Primary and Jefferson Intermediate. Hooverson Heights Primary is currently unrated by Niche, but Jefferson Intermediate has a B-minus score. Both Brooke Middle School and Brooke High School have C ratings. Starting in 2028, students must complete a personal finance course to graduate. The neighborhood has yard sales and festive fall traditions
Hooverson Heights typically has a community-wide yard sale every June. Local organizations and churches occasionally host block parties and fundraisers around the neighborhood. Residents drive into Follansbee each October for the annual Christmas in the Park celebration. "It's a pre-Christmas celebration, almost like a Christmas in July deal, except it's a fall festival," Casini says. Christmas carols fill the air as people admire a giant Nutcracker display on loan from the iconic Steubenville collection. Vendors sell Christmas decorations and gifts. Kids snack on cookies and cocoa as Santa tells stories and takes pictures.Route 2 connects to nearby cities, like Steubenville
Residents are entirely car-dependent. State Route 27 and Rockdale Road are the primary ways in and out of the neighborhood. Both roads connect to Route 2, which cuts through Follansbee and leads to cities like Wellsburg and Steubenville. The nearest airport, Pittsburgh International, is roughly 28 miles away. The closest hospital is Weirton Medical Center, about 8 miles north.Pizza parlors and bars serve casual eats close to Hooverson Heights
The neighborhood is primarily residential, but a few restaurants and shops are nearby. DiCarlo's Pizza offers pizza by the slice or tray, while Pep's Deli and More is the neighborhood's mom and pop convenience store. House of Brews and Mustang Sally's serve drinks and laidback bar fare, but the latter also offers pool tables and a small stage for live music and Friday night karaoke. Main Street in Follansbee has several chain restaurants, pizza joints and a coffee shop called The Grind. The closest grocery stores are Riesbeck's and DG Market, roughly 3 miles away.
