In the shadow of the nation’s capital, just out of eyesight of all that governmental glitz sits Forest Heights, a proudly modest suburb that more than a few government workers and others call home. “Forest Heights is very close to Washington DC. It’s pretty much on the border,” says Thurman Battle, a Realtor with Bennett Realty Solutions. “It’s very convenient to Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. It’s also real close to the National Harbor.”

Forest Heights’ landscape is a hodgepodge of commercial property, apartments and single and attached homes. There are small shopping centers where local residents can get ahold of the essentials and modest homes on neighborhood streets just around the corner. “You have basically smaller lots there and smaller homes around 1,500 square feet or so. Because prices are lower, it would be attractive to a first-time homebuyer who wants someplace they can afford that is conveniently located,” Battle says.

The median selling price here is around $350,000. Homes generally range from about $200,000 to $450,000 on average. While in some communities that sort of price tag may yield something akin to a larger house, in this Greater Metropolitan area, that kind of money doesn’t necessarily get a homebuyer quite the same bang for their buck. “For $200,000, you don’t get a lot in the Washington DC area,” Battle explains. “You probably get a three-bedroom, one-bath, small lot, probably semi-detached. And for the upper end, they would be homes that have been renovated, looking like new with all of the bells and whistles.”

Prince George’s County Public Schools serves Forest Heights students. With 208 schools and more than 136,500 students, it is one of the nation’s 20th largest school districts. Niche gives the district a C rating. Students attend Forest Heights Elementary School, Oxon Hill Middle School and Oxon Hill High School.

If Forest Heights is where you come to get away from the hustle and bustle of government, then Oxon Cove Park and Oxon Hill Farm is where you come to get away from it all. The attraction has hands-on programs that show how farm life and life in general have changed throughout the years. For a more traditional park, you can select from a few, including Forest Heights Neighborhood Park, which has picnic tables, and basketball courts and places to run and play.

All of that running can work up a hefty appetite. You’ll want to be sure to head over to Henry’s Soul Food Café, well known for its sweet potato pie. “It’s been there a while. I’ve been there for carry out. It was good,” Battle says.

Much less modest meals, indeed luxurious ones, are available when you’re in the mood to splurge. Just a short skip away, the National Harbor is full of fine dining as well as retail shops, hotels, that iconic Ferris wheel and the MGM Casino.

With the baseball Nationals Park stadium equally nearby, Forest Heights proves why having amenities within reach is as fortuitous as having them right where you are.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
