Living on Warren Lake
Lakeside living and sustainability intertwine in Warren Shores. Residents of this quiet, south Fort Collins neighborhood enjoy the privacy and conveniences provided by its homeowners association and the residents-only waterfront trail.
Sustainable streetscapes
With the dry heat that comes with Fort Collins summers, the city encourages low-water-use grasses and landscaping. Warren Shores is involved in the Sustainable Neighborhoods Network, which pairs communities with city staff members who work with neighborhood leaders to plan events around sustainability and community building. Events range from landscaping public green spaces and rehabilitating damaged natural areas to guest expert presentations. Roundabouts lie at the end of each street, and many have been transformed into pollinator gardens.

Warren Shores recreation
The 25-acre Warren Park lies just east of the neighborhood’s residential streets, which has tennis courts, a basketball court and multiuse sports fields. The baseball diamond hosts youth baseball and softball leagues. Taking a walk through the park can bring visitors to a small pond where, in spring and early summer, wildflowers line the shore. “Access to Warren Lake is the main reason people move to the neighborhood,” says April Neuhaus, a managing broker with Neuhaus Real Estate. “Locals take kayaks and paddle boards to the lake, which is only accessible to residents of its bordering communities.” Along with drifting along the water’s surface, anglers can cast a line from the shore to catch bass, carp and bluegill. Snow-capped Rocky Mountain peaks serve as a lake-day backdrop. The Collindale Golf Course is a public, 18-hole course bordering Warren Park. After a round, golfers can stop by the clubhouse to enjoy a meal on the patio at C.B. & Potts Restaurant. Warren Shores locals also enjoy private access to an outdoor pool and tennis courts, maintained by the HOA.

The Foothills Shopping Mall has around 30 retail stores and over a dozen dining spots. “Even though it's on the south side of town, it's still easy to reach downtown Fort Collins by bike or car,” Neuhaus says. “No matter where you live in the city, people always end up heading downtown for the best restaurants and nightlife.” It’s a 4-mile drive to reach Old Town via South Lemay Avenue, where there are dozens of locally owned eateries and shops. Mugs is located on the corner of Olive Street and College Avenue. What started as the city’s first wireless internet cafe opened by a group of friends in 2002 is now one of the most popular coffee shops in town, serving up hot and cold brews along with a variety of food, from pesto mac and cheese to sourdough French toast. Closer to home, La Buena Vida, started by the Caballeros, serves traditional Mexican recipes that have been in the family for generations, prepared by international Mexican chefs.

I have lived here for almost 18 months, and feel so fortunate to have landed here. It is surprisingly quiet for being so close to Horsetooth. The description on homes.com is fairly accurate. The only downside is that the lake does rise and fall dramatically with the seasonal cycles, and in late summer we have a real algae problem. But the neighbors and location are absolutely wonderful.
