1950s suburb built from George Washington's estate
Fort Hunt was once part of George Washington's Mount Vernon estate in the 1700s. By the 1950s, it had transformed into an Alexandria suburb when highway construction made the nation's capital more accessible by car. Even today, residents enjoy a simple commute to D.C., a strong community spirit and the idyllic architecture and curb appeal of that postwar era. "What's special about Fort Hunt is its sense of community," says Rebecca McCullough, a resident and broker with Corcoran McEnearney. "With three neighborhood pools, walking paths and organized events bringing the community together, there's a kind of throwback way of living here."
According to the census, Fort Hunt had a population of 17,231 residents in 2020, a 7.3% increase from 2010. Though it's normal for residents to commute to the Pentagon and Washington's federal employers, some Fortune 500 companies have recently moved their offices to Alexandria and Arlington, like Amazon's second corporate headquarters just a few miles north of Fort Hunt.
Fort Hunt is part of the Fairfax County Police Department's Mount Vernon District. Police data from the Mount Vernon District shows a drop in most violent crimes from 2022 to 2023. Fort Hunt's rates of property and violent crime still fall below the national average.
