Throwback living in Fort Hunt
Those who find themselves longing for simpler days- summers at the pool, family bike rides and catching fireflies on the Fourth of July- will be happy to know these days are still well and alive in Fort Hunt, Virginia. Largely built in the 1950s, this all-residential neighborhood is just 15 miles south of the nation's capital and contours the western banks of the Potomac River. After working in the city, residents of Fort Hunt come home to a peaceful suburb and spacious homes surrounded by tall, mature trees and plenty of greenery. Fort Hunt is a "Beacon for families," says Rebecca McCullough, a neighborhood resident and local Realtor who has been selling homes in Northern Virginia since 2013, adding that "What's special about Fort Hunt is its sense of community. With three neighborhood pools, walking paths and organized events bringing the community together, there's a kind of throwback way of living here," says McCullough. Living in this family-friendly community, residents can "just hop on the parkway to get to Old Town, Alexandria in about eight minutes," while still having access to popular youth programs for the family and "sought-after schools within walking distance from home." With proximity to the Potomac River and Washington, D.C. so close by, residents of Fort Hunt enjoy a unique combination of access to the nation's capital and its major attractions with nostalgic, simple living in a tight-knit neighborhood.
Homes in Fort Hunt are nestled between trees on quiet streets.
Mid-century family homes with a blend of price points
With an average sales price of about $970,000, homes in Fort Hunt are almost $170,000 dollars more expensive than the average for Fairfax County. This may be because they also offer sizable footprints, lush surroundings along the Potomac, and access to several community pools with no homeowners associations. Built on what was once George Washington's estate, many homes proudly display plaques recognizing their rich history and offer charming colonial revival features like dormer windows and wrap-around porches. Sprinkled throughout older homes are newer builds constructed within the last ten years, showcasing sleeker designs and custom details, like open floor plans and large, walk-in closets. Because Fort Hunt runs along the banks of the Potomac and a creek also winds through the neighborhood, another highlight of homes here is their serene river views and private docks on the water. In addition to so many features, McCullough recommends the neighborhood for its "wonderful blend of options and price points," with homes ranging as low as $600,000 for three and four-bedroom colonial revival and ranch-style homes featuring original mid-century construction. For one to $3 million dollars, six-bedroom mansion homes featuring up to 8,000 square feet and private docks along the Potomac can also be found.
Fairfax County Public Schools in the neighborhood
Students of Fort Hunt have several charter, public and private school options in the neighborhood to choose from. One public school that stands out is Stratford Landing Elementary School, which received a rating of A-minus on Niche. Their highly-anticipated spring event, Techstravaganza, held annually, is a STEM activity fair for young students. There are hands-on booths and activities for children of all ages and demonstrators like NASA, Robotics for Youth and the American Society for Naval Engineers. Students can continue their education at other highly-rated schools like Sandburg Middle and West Potomac High, which received ratings of A-minus and B-plus from Niche. West Potomac offers several state-champion athletic programs, from football to cross country and track, as well as clubs and organizations like a Boys Volleyball club, band and The Thirst Project.

Shopping and dining at Hollin Hall Shopping Center
In addition to options just a stone's throw away on Route 1 and plenty of restaurants close by in Alexandria, Fort Hunt residents can shop and eat at Hollin Hall Shopping Center, a strip mall that has been preserved right along Fort Hunt Road since its original build in 1958. The shops may change from time to time, but one of its mainstays is the Hollin Hall Variety store, a colorful spot where residents can purchase Legos, puzzles and other colorful toys and entertainment items. Another is Village Hardware, a family-run shop with everything residents need to maintain the perfect lawn or enjoy grilling outdoors. For a full stock up on groceries and essentials, residents can head to Safeway for groceries. For something to eat, residents can support local, family-owned and run businesses by stopping by Roseina's, an American cafe and wine shop where residents can take out eclectic bistro fare like sandwiches and seafood.
