East Fort Myers
Next to the shops and restaurants of downtown
Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard is one of the main commercial thoroughfares of the neighborhood and features popular restaurants like Hook’s Catch Seafood & Wings, known for its fried catfish baskets. The 400,000-square-foot Fleamasters Flea Market has attracted visitors since it opened in 1986. Residents are also close to the upscale dining and boutique shopping of First Street downtown. Restaurant options range from fresh seafood at Izzy’s Fish and Oyster to burgers and brews at Ford’s Garage, which plays on the area’s historical roots as the winter home of Henry Ford. “It's just a fun little part of town,” says Billee Silva, a local Realtor with Jones & Co. Realty. The World Famous Cigar Bar is one of many places to grab a cocktail in front of live music. “It's very slower-paced. You can just come in your shorts and flip-flops and have a nice dinner or some burgers and fries.” Dollar General and Publix are nearby.Historic homes and high-rise condos
East Fort Myers contains an array of housing, from high-rise waterfront condos to manufactured homes in the Southward Village subdivision. The neighborhood is also home to Dean Park Historic District, a collection of 80 homes, primarily built between 1916 and the mid-1920s. The district’s palm-tree-lined streets shade Craftsman-style bungalows and colorful Florida-style ranch homes. “It is its own little deal,” Silva says. “There are cool older homes with great personality and architecture.” Historically designated properties range between $450,000 and $650,000. Outside the district’s boundaries, smaller cottages and older builds with stucco exteriors sit on quiet residential streets. The area is popular among investors due to the house's proximity to downtown Fort Myers, with single-family residences ranging between $100,000 and $400,000. Rivera Condominium is one of the numerous high-rise complexes along the Caloosahatchee River. Two-to-three-bedroom units range from $300,000 to $500,000, while larger units on higher floors cost around $750,000.Recreation on land or sea at Shady Oaks Park
Shady Oaks Park serves as the hub for recreation and can be enjoyed by land or sea. The city-maintained green space features two softball fields and a kayak launch to explore the nearby Billy Creek. Other popular spots in the neighborhood include Clemente Park and Dunbar Park. Fort Myers Stars Complex is ideal for parents of school-age children as the community center offers after-school programs, recreational sports leagues and creative arts classes. Rainy days can be spent exploring the fossil exhibits and live aquariums of the IMAG History & Science Center. And a day on the water is never far as the lapping shores of Fort Myers Beach are just 18 miles away.Dean Park events and downtown celebrations
Dean Park Historic District holds numerous events throughout the year, including an annual Bar-B-Que & Blues block party, which is held under an expansive banyan tree. Residents are also close to the year-round celebrations of Downtown Fort Myers. The monthly art walk lights up First Street with creative exhibitions by local and regional artists. Later in the month, the music walk follows in similar footsteps, with scores of musicians taking to the streets to perform rock, blues and smooth jazz. Other art and musical performances are held at the Sydney & Berne Davis Art Center, which is under a mile away. Two forms of public transportation
East Fort Myers is considered pedestrian-friendly. Residents enjoy walking to nearby attractions downtown, under a mile away. “For someone who doesn’t have a driver's license or car, this area would be something to consider,” says Irene Moser, a Realtor with Century 21 Selling Paradise. The county’s public bus service, LeeTran, and the River District Trolley have multiple stops throughout the neighborhood. And for those traveling farther, Southwest Florida International Airport is 17 miles away. Residents are only about 43 miles away from Naples and 161 miles from Miami.
