Rural community is now commercial hub
At the intersection of Massard Road and Rogers Avenue, drivers pass a sign that reads “Historic Massard Community.” This sign is the last marker of Massard, a formerly self-sufficient rural area that eventually became an extension of Fort Smith, Arkansas. “I can look out my back window to the north and see where my grandfather used to have his service station and my uncle used to have his community grocery store at the intersection of Massard Road and Rogers Avenue,” says Roger Ruth, a lifelong resident who has seen the community drastically evolve over the decades. “But as it stands right now, we are completely surrounded by commercial businesses.” National chains such as Walmart and Texas Roadhouse are down the street from the hospital and houses of worship.

Big box stores and local barbeque
Most of the stores in Massard are national chains, with big box stores such as Walmart and Lowe’s. That's also true of many restaurants in the area, including Olive Garden, but there are some independently owned eateries. Ruth recommends Art’s BBQ & Burgers. “They make some of the most ungodliest barbeque you’d ever put in your mouth – and the onion rings! I don’t know what is better, the onion rings or the barbeque sandwich.” Downtown Fort Smith, about 5 miles away, is home to more small businesses. At Belle Starr Antiques, people can find anything from a new plant to a dining room set older than their home. Rolando’s Restaurante is a popular Downtown establishment serving Nuevo Latino food, which puts a modern twist on classic Latin American dishes. Folks can get groceries at Harps Food Store or Sam’s Club. Every Saturday, the Fort Smith Farmer’s Market sells locally grown produce and other handmade goods, including pastries and sauces.

Car-dependent near hospital and airport
Massard residents have to rely on their cars for transportation. Rogers Avenue connects the community to Interstate 540 and Downtown Fort Smith. Mercy Hospital Fort Smith is on Rogers. “We hear sirens 24/7,” Ruth says. “If it’s not a firetruck, it’s an ambulance. If it’s not an ambulance, it’s a cop.” Additional noise comes from the Fort Smith Regional Airport and Ebbing Air National Guard, less than 1 mile away. Air traffic is increasing because Fort Smith is the training center for all F-35 pilots from the United States and international allies, including Singapore and Poland. This new project promises to boost Fort Smith’s economy, but there will be more noise from the increased flights.
Biker rally Downtown supports community
Fort Smith hosts several events throughout the year. One annual highlight is the Steel Horse Rally, a motorcycle rally that fills Garrison Avenue. The main drag of Downtown is shut down to allow bikers to ride through the River Valley. Attendees can park and walk along the sidewalks, enjoying live music and shopping at local businesses. A charitable event, the rally raises money for nonprofits and community organizations, such as the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Clubs and the Buddy Smith Home for Veterans.
Parks surround Massard
Massard is about 2 miles from two outdoor areas – Carol Ann Cross Park, a small park known for its fishing pier, and Ben Geren Park. As the largest county park in Arkansas, spanning over 1,300 acres, Ben Geren offers plenty of opportunities to get active, including a playground and athletic fields. The water park is open during the warmer months. And the park's vast trail system includes over 7 miles of paved paths and 14 miles of unpaved trails. Ruth sometimes rides his bike there but says many people travel the extra mile to Creekmore Park. Families can visit the trampolines and zipline at Spartan Adventure Park for indoor fun. Nearby, the Dallas Branch of the Fort Smith Public Library hosts craft nights, Storytime and seasonal events such as trick-or-treating.
