Homebuyers choose Wright for its convenience and affordability

Wright sits just north of Fort Walton Beach, and, to locals, it’s a natural extension of the city. It attracts military families who want to live close to Eglin Air Force Base or Hurlburt Field while staying near everyday amenities like grocery stores and restaurants. Wright is a bit more affordable than nearby areas like Ocean City or Shalimar but offers the same access to vacation destinations, like Okaloosa Island and Destin, year-round.

What housing looks like and costs in Wright

Wright offers a range of housing options for various budgets. “Among military families, there’s turnover every 3 to 5 years,” says Susan Sharpe, a broker with Exit Realty Anchor South and Fort Walton Beach resident. “But vacationers drive the market as much as the military population. The military keeps the market moving when the vacation market is slow.” Condos and townhouses built in the 1970s and '80s are typically in the $100,000 range, while those built more recently range from the low $200,000s to the low $300,000s, with those built since 2020 reaching the high $300,000s. Single-family homes typically start in the low $100,000s for properties needing repairs and reach the low $700,000s for a house in a gated community. Single-family home prices depend on size, age, condition and location more than architectural style. Most homes are single-story, ranch-style homes, many with Mediterranean influences. You can also find ramblers, Cape Cods, Colonial Revivals and New Traditionals in Wright.

Emerald Coast beaches are within driving distance

Wright’s proximity to the Emerald Coast’s scenic beaches is a major draw for buyers. “It’s a short drive—maybe 15 minutes—to many beach access points,” Sharpe says. Here’s what you can expect from nearby beaches:

  • Okaloosa Island offers a laid-back stretch of sugar-white sand for swimming, sunbathing and pier fishing, plus easy access to the family-friendly restaurants along its boardwalk.
  • Destin, a former fishing village, is famous for its emerald-green waters that are great for deep-sea fishing charters, boating, snorkeling and dolphin cruises.
  • Fort Walton Beach has a local, low-key beach scene that’s ideal for relaxed days sunbathing, kayaking or paddleboarding.

What to know about storms and flooding

Because of its near-coastal location, Wright is at risk of storms and flooding. Here’s what prospective homebuyers should know:

  • Wright’s biggest flood drivers are coastal flooding from storm surge or high tides and heavy-rain drainage flooding.
  • The City of Fort Walton Beach puts only the southern and eastern edges of Wright in predicted hurricane surge or flood zones.
  • Okaloosa County explicitly warns that flood damage isn’t covered by homeowners insurance, and flood insurance often has a waiting period.
  • Evacuation guidance comes from county or city resources.

Retail and restaurant choices throughout Wright

Commercial amenities are scattered across Wright. Along Beal Parkway, you’ll find big-box retailers such as Walmart Supercenter, Sam’s Club, Kohl’s and Lowe’s Home Improvement. Nearby grocery stores include Publix and Aldi, and dining options throughout Wright range from nationally known drive-throughs to local sit-down restaurants.

How school choice works in Okaloosa County

Okaloosa County School District offers school choice through magnet-style specialty programs and Controlled Open Enrollment, which allows students to attend a non-zoned public school when the school has space available. When requests exceed capacity, placements follow published priorities and may be assigned by a random lottery, while certain specialty programs use their own application timelines and lottery selections.

Easy access to military bases and beach destinations

State roads 188 and 189, major area thoroughfares, intersect in the rough center of Wright. These roadways connect to other primary routes and can take locals toward Fort Walton Beach, Ocean City, Okaloosa Island and Destin, all less than 15 miles away. “This entire area is affected by seasonal traffic, but Wright avoids a lot of it,” Sharpe says. “It’s not on the route to the beach.”
Eglin Air Force Base and Hurlburt Field, two major employers in the region, are less than 10 miles from Wright. “There’s easy access to the back gate of Hurlburt and Eglin’s front entrance,” Sharpe says. Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport is about 7 miles away, and HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital is in the community.
