Outdoor attractions and other amenities abound in Bloomingdale
Unfolding from the banks of the St. Marys River is Bloomingdale, a neighborhood full of classic homes and burgeoning appeal. This is a walkable area, a boon for those looking to peruse the enclave’s array of restaurants, shops and parks. And it’s a part of the city that is continuing to evolve, though the crime score still ranks slightly above the national average according to the CAP Index. “They’re building up the riverfront so much,” says local Realtor Linda Williams of The Gates Williams Group. “So Bloomingdale is definitely an area of a lot of beautifying.”

Houses here still have plenty of life
There are plenty of homes in Bloomingdale that date back to the 19th century, and many more that were built in the early 20th century. Thus, this area’s sidewalk-lined residential streets are filled with classic colonials and bungalows with floor plans stretching an average of 1,629 square feet. And, despite their age, the houses in this area still attract investment — a lot of them have received updates. Bloomingdale’s properties leave room for a tad bit of lawn space, too, on lots that are often around one-tenth of an acre. Some of the neighborhood’s homes are multifamily options, particularly duplexes. Price tags in Bloomingdale usually fall between $100,000 and $200,000.

Wade over to Wells Street for attractions
While Bloomingdale is largely residential, residents can stroll right over to the thoroughfare of Wells Street for several restaurants and other businesses. Among the hotspots is Klemm's on Wells, whose menu proclaims itself to be the “Best Breakfast in Town!” Klemm’s breakfast platters come with loaded portions, too. Don Chava's Mexican Grill is another hotspot, particularly for the margaritas. Locals can follow a meal with shopping at places like Hyde Brothers Booksellers and Cog and Pearl, which is full of souvenirs and home goods. Then they can head across the neighborhood to 3 Rivers Natural Grocery Food Co-op & Deli to grab foodstuffs for the rest of the week. People can also migrate over to the riverfront by nearby Downtown Fort Wayne for many more restaurants and other attractions. ”It’s just a neat area,” says Williams, a Fort Wayne native. “A lot of focus on walking and getting local businesses, restaurants, that kind of thing.”

Promenade Park is a local base of activity
Bloomingdale lies across the St. Marys River from Promenade Park, which opened in 2019 as part of a riverfront revitalization project totaling $88.7 million. And Promenade Park has already become a hub of programming in the area, hosting everything from free monthly yoga sessions to free monthly kickboxing classes. Promenade Park is also among the top spots to see the city’s Fourth of July fireworks show, which is shot off from the roof of the Indiana Michigan Power Company downtown.

Riverfront provides built-in recreation
Among the area’s crown jewels is the almost 12-acre Bloomingdale Park, which hugs the shore of the St. Marys River. Bloomingdale features a playground, basketball courts and fishing access to the river. Part of the city’s 26-mile, paved Rivergreenway trail cuts through Bloomingdale Park as well. Getting over to the relatively new Promenade Park, across the river, is as simple as a stroll across the Wells Street Bridge, a pedestrian pathway. Promenade Park’s features include an expansive playground and an amphitheater. It’s also a spot where people can catch Sweet Breeze, a canal boat tour. “That’s a huge landmark, that the state’s pretty proud of,” Williams says, of Promenade Park.
