Colonial Park
Happy-hour haunts and a night of ha-ha's
Colonial Park sits beside Washington Square, a small shopping center. Residents can shop for specialty groceries at Magadoo Asian Grocery, pick up small essentials at Dollar General or grab a bite from Jalapeños Mexican Grill. However, 1 mile east of the neighborhood is Marketplace of Canterbury, a larger center with more diverse options. Locals can start their day at Breakfast Clubb, a Greek-owned mom-and-pop serving American breakfast classics and hot coffee. The Corner Pocket Club is a favorite happy-hour haunt for casual bar food bites and billiards. For a special night out, locals can have a laugh at Summit City Comedy Club or dance the night away at Piere’s Entertainment Center.Shoaff spray park and golf course
Northwood Park, a vast green space beside Northwood Middle School, is the closest park to the neighborhood. Residents can picnic on the grass or walk around the paved track. For a wider range of outdoor activity, Shoaff Park is 1-1/2 miles east of the neighborhood. With over 185 acres, the park keeps visitors busy with ball fields, sports courts, a splash pad and even an 18-hole, all-par three public golf course. It also sits beside 1 mile of riverbank, so parkgoers can run along the St. Joseph River or use the park’s boating ramp space to start their day on the water. Local Realtor Simmie Upchurch Jr. of Coldwell Banker Commercial shares another popular spot to get fresh air, although it’s a bit out of the way at 4-1/2 miles away: “You got the Pufferbelly Trail where a lot of people do their morning jog. A lot of people walk their dogs on that, too.”Higher ed around the corner
Students in the neighborhood attend Fort Wayne Community Schools, which scores a B- on Niche. Children can attend Holland Elementary School, which has a B on Niche, followed by Jefferson Middle School, which has a C-plus rating and a diverse music department. At the B-minus-rated Northrop High School, students can participate in fine arts classes that focus on choir, visual arts and dance. If parents want a private high school option, Bishop Dwenger High School is right by the community along East Washington Center Road and has a B-plus on Niche. The co-educational school opened its doors in 1963 and is now one of Indiana’s largest Catholic schools. The unrated Concordia Theological Seminary and the B-rated Purdue University Fort Wayne are two high education options within 2 miles of Colonial Park.Families and retirees alike welcome
Colonial Park’s housing stock is a mixture of Cape Cods, ranches, split-levels and contemporary-style properties. These properties feature spacious front yards that are well-kept and usually dotted with tall trees that provide shade for the home and the narrow street below. Prices depend on property size, but most properties sell between $200,000 and $260,000. The market is fast-paced, and homes average just four days before being sold. “It’s a popular area,” Upchurch Jr. says. “Ten homes were sold in that specific neighborhood just in the past year.” While not single-family housing, The Towne House Retirement Community is also part of Colonial Park. The development offers individuals 62 and over a place to live without worrying about household responsibilities. The community offers assisted living, rehab services and memory care, as well as amenities like a fitness center, a library and dining venues.Getting around Colonial Park
Commuters are about 1 mile from Interstate 69 and 4-1/2 miles from Downtown Fort Wayne. Those who take public transit can access bus stops along North Clinton Street. For long-distance travel, Fort Wayne International Airport is 20-1/2 miles away.
