Downtown Fort Wayne’s 99 blocks of arts, culture and recreation buzz with a level of activity not seen for miles in any direction. "There's a lot of energy here," says Realtor Justin Walborn of Mike Thomas Associates, Inc. Artwork is seamlessly incorporated into the culture of downtown, thanks to The Art This Way organization. In that vein, Arts Campus Fort Wayne is a popular weekend destination. The community’s centralized location lends to its appeal, with gridded streets allowing easy access to the many other attractions of the vibrant riverside city. "There's so much growth and revitalization, which has spurred change in the culture of downtown with restaurants, shops and the riverfront," Walborn says. "It's getting more attractive every day."

Art is as integral to downtown life as getting outdoors
Arts Campus Fort Wayne is a cultural district within the city, housing the Museum of Art as well as Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Dance Collective and the Artlink. The Fort Wayne Museum of Art is a hub of weekend activity. A blend of existing and rotating exhibitions keeps things interesting. The museum also offers Pre-K and school tours to involve the community's younger learners. Its staff proudly display 20th century American artists' works in their special collection.
Fort Wayne is home to three rivers: St Mary’s, St Joseph and the Maumee. Residents explore these three by foot, bike and boat, experiencing an intrinsic part of Fort Wayne's heritage. The 120 miles of trails and more than 80 plazas and parks provide a gorgeous setting for a morning run, an afternoon stroll or a leisurely bike ride. Those hunting for the best views head to Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge while the more adventurous kayak down one of the city’s rivers. Promenade Park and Headwaters Park host riverfront community events and maintain a robust calendar to keep the family entertained throughout every season. They catch the summer concert series at Promenade's amphitheater, wake up with morning yoga, take the kids to the splash pads and accessible playground and attend the annual Three Rivers Festival at the Headwaters' pavilion.

Stopping for a bite or a drink in downtown
An amalgam of sit-down restaurants with outdoor searing occupies the five blocks between Superior Street and Jefferson Boulevard. Expansive murals and light sculptures cast a warm evening glow for the night owls out and about. The Landing, a noteworthy strip for shopping and a bite to eat, sits at the corner of Superior Street and Harrison Street. The Landing was the site of the city’s first hotel in 1823 and has since undergone a revitalization project to preserve its historic architecture while modernizing its offerings. “The neighborhood is vibrant, and it’s very strong,” says Realtor Jay Howell of Red Howell Associates, Inc. “Things are happening downtown, no doubt about it.” Local favorites such as upscale urban bar Marquee and Alto Grado Pizza line the block. For groceries, Kroger has the basics, while find global flavors abound at George's International Market one mile to the south.

Roomy condos and fixer-uppers
With a mix of renovated historic buildings and new construction across the neighborhood, the city has put much effort into rejuvenating its residential and commercial spaces. "It's a growing place that appeals to younger and older home buyers alike," says Walborn. Roomy condominiums with contemporary floor plans comprise most of the market, featuring modern technology, updated appliances, and amenities like gyms and recreation rooms. These typically consist of affordable one-bedroom units priced between $125,000 and $230,000. High-rise tower units fall in the middle, reaching $450,000 or $550,000 for a space exceeding 1,000 square feet. Sprawling 3,000-square-foot units fetch $900,000 to $2 million. A single-family fixer-upper is hard to come by, and when they do, it’s along downtown’s periphery rather than in the center. “There’s a lack of housing in the downtown community, something like 1,000 units we need additionally,” says Howell. “They’re going to try to expand on the waterfront what we have here, which will obviously create more enthusiasm, and more people walking downtown at night.”
