Five Points is where Downtown amenities meet wooded suburbs
Fort Wayne has its fair share of wooded suburbs, but few are so close to Downtown, major parks and a zoo. Franke Park and the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, both less than half a mile northwest, go hand in hand. A day exploring the animal exhibits could warrant a stroll through the park afterwards, or vice versa. Indoor attractions, such as the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, are two miles away Downtown. “It’s pretty centrally located without being too close to Downtown,” says Realtor Tracy Hale of Century 21 Bradley Realty. The neighborhood also benefits from multiple Citilink bus stops along Sherman Boulevard. “Getting anywhere in Fort Wayne is easy from here,” says Hale. On top of that, Five Points home buyers will save thousands of dollars settling down in this competitively priced suburb as an alternative to Downtown.

A day fishing on Shoaff Lake or exploring the Zoo
Five Points residents are within walking distance to outdoor fun. Franke Park, located just north of the neighborhood, is a 340-acre green space anchored by Shoaff Lake. Folks can wander around the lakeside trails or stop to cast a line for rainbow trout and yellow bullhead. Speaking of animals, the park is also home to the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo. “The Zoo is going to be your biggest attraction in the 46808 zip code,” says Barnes. Aside from general admission, it has special pay-per-ride attractions like a crocodile creek adventure and an endangered species carousel for kids. Visitors can also feed giraffes and stingrays alongside farm animals. In the summertime, kids may attend Franke Park’s day camp. Ages four to 18 are welcome Monday through Friday during June and July. Set on the grassy hillside of Franke Park, Foellinger Theater is a covered open-air theater that entertains the community with year-round events, such as summer concert series and performances. “The venue puts on theater shows and plays and will have some pretty well-known bands come through,” says Hale.

Simple, neat homes priced well below the national average
Time-worn, gridded residential streets are punctuated with tall, mature trees amid sparse and narrow sidewalks. Lots are small, featuring homes built in the early to mid-1900s. Buyers can expect to find cozy bungalows, established worker’s cottages, and modest, minimalistic ranch-style homes. The typical layout is two to three bedrooms and one bathroom. “It’s just an affordable area with older homes that are a little bit on the smaller side,” says Warren Barnes, Team Leader and Associate Broker with North Eastern Group Realty. Though some of the more established builds may require attention and care, smaller homes at the lower price point can be between 600 to 1,000 square feet, fetching as little as $55,000. On the opposite end, homes spanning over 2,000 square feet with recent updates and remodeling sell for $150,000. The median single-family home price is $113,000 here, compared to the Downtown area’s median figure of $200,000. On average, most homes in Five Points sell after only ten days on the market.

Getting around Five Points and commuting into Downtown Fort Wayne
Most people who live in Five Points get around by car, but the Citilink bus is a convenient alternative for accessing Downtown. There are two stops along Sherman Boulevard, which runs north to south through the neighborhood. After boarding from one of these stops, the 2.4-mile commute into Fort Wayne takes about 23 minutes during morning rush hour or otherwise. There is one final method of getting around open to residents because Downtown is so close. “A lot of people like to bike the commute because it’s so close to downtown amenities,” says Hale.
