An established, historic Fort Wayne neighborhood
Amid blocks and blocks of more sedate, more densely built homes, Forest Park stands out as an enclave of broader yards, bigger homes and a sense of community on Fort Wayne's east side. Arrayed along the divided lanes of Forest Park Drive, the neighborhood is just north of a favored park and evokes a different kind of feeling than the surrounding cityscape. “It’s almost like a step back in time,” said Realtor Nancey Weaver of Keller Williams Fort Wayne. Historic homes from the early 20th century average about 4,000 square feet in a community of about 10 city blocks. “There’s a lot of pride of ownership in those areas and preserving the history of the homes," says Realtor Drew Morken of Morken Real Estate Services, Inc.

Well-maintained, century-old homes
Half-acre lots feature manicured lawns and tree-shaded sidewalks, though nearby neighborhoods often consist of properties half the size. Many of Forest Park’s homes were built in the 1910s and 1920s, with Colonial Revivals as the most common style. Tudor and French Provincials also make an appearance. “They’re just beautiful homes, and you get to have a lot of history,” says Morken, who has been selling in the area for more than two years. Four- and five-bedroom homes exceeding 4,000 square feet sell for between $450,000 and $1 million, depending on extras such as a pool or an extra bedroom. “The homes are all different because they were all completed by different builders,” says Weaver. “A lot of them have been remodeled. They’re such beautiful, established homes that have been well-maintained.” A handful of older fixer-uppers float around the $350,000 mark. Despite the potential, homes rarely come on the market. “And when they do, it’s a lot of word of mouth,” says Weaver.

Spending a day at Lakeside Park
Just across Vermont Avenue on the neighborhood's southern edge, Lakeside Park is one of the area’s outdoor highlights for passive visits, though there are tennis and pickleball courts, a playground and a basketball court. A pond, fountain and walkable rose garden are among the more leisurely attractions. “People will come from all over to take wedding or prom photos,” Weaver says. Lakeside Park hosts multiple events through the year. The list includes periodic food truck rallies, outdoor concerts and ice skating when conditions permit.

Intersecting Forest Park's main street is East State Boulevard, a busy commercial stretch with restaurants such as Hall’s Prime Rib beyond the neighborhood's boundaries. “Hall’s has very good food at a reasonable price,” says Morken. “And always great customer service.” The Village Tap down the street is renowned for its wings. Residents can stop by Oh Five Scoop Shop for ice cream. “Fort Wayne has just got so many great restaurants,” says Morken. “It’s hard not to find something close to you.” Fort Wayne Halal Meat & Grocery and Kroger are also available for grocery shopping.
