Embrace the urban pulse of Hamilton; close proximity to downtown Fort Wayne
Hamilton is a near-downtown residential neighborhood
Hamilton is a primarily residential neighborhood just northwest of the city center. Revitalization projects such as park upgrades and walking paths have been under way in Fort Wayne’s downtown in recent years, which has had an effect on the surrounding neighborhoods, says Jim Owen, a Realtor with Century 21 Bradley Realty, Inc. “Now that the city has invested some money in the area, it’s drawing in younger people who want to be in an urban area,” he says. A diverse collection of homes line the streets near the St. Mary’s River, providing plenty of housing options from which Hamilton homebuyers can choose.
Houses come in a mix of styles dating back to 1900
Tree-shaded sidewalks border both sides of the streets in Hamilton. “There’s no one unifying style in Hamilton, but you won’t find many brand-new houses or empty lots for building,” says Andrea Gates, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker. The neighborhood’s oldest homes date back to the early 1900s, but older homes are often updated when new owners move in. “Now, there’s a mix of styles in the neighborhood, as older homes have been replaced and remodeled,” Owen says. Colonials, one-story cottages and Cape Cods are the most common styles, and living space ranges from around 700 to 2,000 square feet. Lot sizes vary from under a tenth of an acre to a third of an acre. Prices range between $75,000 and $250,000.

As close as Hamilton is to downtown, dining options are close by and varied. West State Boulevard, a commercial thoroughfare in the area, cuts through part of Hamilton and is lined with both fast casual chains and locally owned restaurants. Green Frog Inn opened in 1933 and is known for its weekend brunch menu and its Wednesday Wing nights. “Green Frog is one of the more traditional watering holes in the area,” says Owen. Fortlandia, Fort Wayne’s first nanobrewery, serves local beers on Spring Street. Kroger is in the West State Plaza shopping center, and 3 Rivers Natural Grocery Food Co-op & Deli is at the corner of Spring Street and Sherman Boulevard.
