Harrison Hill
Suburban Neighborhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana
Allen County 46807
Homes with historic details overlook downtown
Harrison Hill overlooks the city to the north, and residents enjoy views of the downtown skyline from front porches or neat, small yards. The community's original builders drew architectural influence from popular early 20th-century designs with charming wooden details inspired by Tudors, Colonial revivals and Cape Cods. Properties range in price between $130,000 and $200,000 and are generally priced lower than houses in the surrounding neighborhoods. "The market is steady and consistent. We tend to be more insulated here," Ruhl says, adding that most for-sale homes find a new owner within a week.Three large parks are within walking distance
Packard Park, the closest park to Harrison Hill, is tailored for children. It has a playground and seasonal splash pad. A block north is Lutheran Park, a larger spot with walking paths and dotted with statues commemorating the Lutheran Hospital that once occupied the site. West of Harrison Hill, Foster Park's hundreds of acres are punctuated with gardens and nature trails. It also features a golf course, children's play area, a replica of Abraham Lincoln's log cabin and views of the St. Mary's River.Harrison Hill hosts year-round events at its parks, from beautification projects such as tree plantings to social gatherings such as book clubs and holiday celebrations. The neighborhood association is active, hosting monthly town meetings. According to Ruhl, the biggest local project is Packard 2030, a Fort Wayne community development plan for 15 adjoining neighborhoods, focusing on revitalization, neighborhood character, parks and mobility in the city’s southwest urban core. "We're investing in current residents, inclusivity, infrastructure and creative arts-focused initiatives," Ruhl says.
Children can walk to the public elementary school
Students are zoned in the Fort Wayne Community District. Students may enroll in Harrison Hill Elementary, graded C by Niche and no more than a half-mile from any location in the neighborhood. Kekionga Middle, graded C plus, is the next stop on the public-school track, followed by South Side High, graded C by Niche. The high school is a towering historic building with a football stadium field and the city's only Olympic-sized swimming pool, which is indoors. In addition to public schools, Fort Wayne is known for its private and faith-based schooling options, several of which are within commuting distance of Harrison Hill.Harrison Hill residents enjoy easy work commutes
Close to main city connectors and some of the region's top employers, the neighborhood is in a prime location for commuters. According to Century 21 Bradley Realtor Tim Tower, many local businesses rent office space in brick buildings on the Electric Works campus, 2 miles north of the neighborhood. “Electric Works is a big draw for the area,” says Tower. “Tons of vendors serve lunch, and the office spaces are cool and industrial.”The city center is 3 miles north, and Lutheran Hospital is around 7 miles west. Fairfield Avenue, South Calhoun Street and Highway 27 run near the neighborhood and lead downtown. Most residents can walk to bus stops lining these main roads for a car-free commute, and longer-distance travel starts 6 miles south at Fort Wayne International Airport. "From Harrison Hill, you can get anywhere in 15 to 20 minutes," says Ruhl.
Dining and retail are found at Southgate Shopping Center
Shops and restaurants within Harrison Hill contribute to the neighborhood's walkable lifestyle. Chance Bar, immediately adjacent to homes in the neighborhood, serves New American dishes in its upscale, white-tablecloth dining room. More casual dining is found at Friendly Fox, also in a residential area just outside of the neighborhood. It specializes in breakfast and lunch. Several commercial stop-offs along the main roads offer groceries, chain restaurants and essential businesses such as banks and gas stations. Kroger is the neighborhood's nearest supermarket, located about a mile south in Southgate Shopping Center.
