Imperial Gardens
1960s-era homes and tree-lined streets
Narrow streets and sidewalks weave throughout the acreage of Imperial Gardens, forming cul-de-sacs 8 miles from downtown. Neatly spaced homes occupy quarter-acre lots, a more generous amount of land than buyers would find closer to the city. “It’s a little bit of an older neighborhood and the lots are larger than the newer neighborhoods,” says Teague. The neighborhood is comprised of ranch-style and split-level homes, most offering attached garages and private driveways, two perks typical of Fort Wayne’s suburbs. A standard three-bedroom home can be found selling for between $175,000 and $250,000.Heading outdoors in Imperial Gardens
Nature enthusiasts will love living close to the Mengerson Nature Preserve, tucked between homes and a busy shopping center. Visitors can hike its wooded paths, and leashed dogs are allowed. Kreager Park is a 2-mile drive south. The sprawling area offers a playground, splash pad, tennis courts and soccer fields. There’s also the Rivergreenway, a lengthy walking and biking trail that follows the banks of the Maumee River. Golfers can take a swing much closer to home at the Arlington Park Golf Course, which is about a quarter-mile east of Imperial Gardens and is open to the public.Shopping along Maysville and Stellhorn Roads
A short drive west along Stellhorn Road reveals Northwood Plaza and Maplewood Plaza, two small shopping center that straddle either side of the thoroughfare. Target and Big Lots are the anchors, with smaller restaurants in the surrounding area. Residents can dine in at the family-owned Casa Grille Italiano or stop by Los Tacos Paco for carryout. Various fast food chains can be found across the parking lot as well.Attending class in Imperial Gardens
Students can attend Arlington Elementary, which has an overall Niche grade of B-minus. They then move to Jefferson Middle, which gets a C-plus. B-minus-rated Northrop High School completes the list with a competitive show choir for extracurricular involvement.Commuting to Downtown Fort Wayne
Stellhorn Road gives residents access to nearby stores and such, but it also connects to main roads leading to downtown. The 6-mile drive to Downtown Fort Wayne lasts about 15 minutes, while a bus ride takes half an hour and makes nearly 40 stops along the way. Reaching the city’s hospitals is a similar, 40-minute trip. The Fort Wayne International Airport is a 15-mile, 30-minute drive away.Flooding in Fort Wayne
Due to its three intersecting rivers, Fort Wayne is known for periodic flooding. Major incidents of property damage have occurred in past decades. This is less of an issue for the residents of Imperial Gardens, though, because the river nearest the neighborhood is 2.5 miles away. In fact, the closest body of water to Imperial Gardens is the decorative ponds at the Arlington Park Golf Course.
