A sought-after community with an active neighborhood association
The small, quiet community of Imperial Gardens lies on Fort Wayne’s northeast end. Despite the name, there’s nothing imposing or aloof about the area. “It’s been a well-established neighborhood for 30 or 40 years,” says Realtor Robert Rolf of Mike Thomas Associates. The Imperial-Swathmore Civic Association engages the community by organizing various events such as ice cream socials, garage sales and community cleanup days. Plenty of enriching activities exist for young people and adults at the nearby Jackson R. Lehman Family YMCA. Aside from community engagement, perhaps the biggest draw to Imperial Gardens and the outskirts of Fort Wayne is the efforts homeowners make on their older properties. “In the past few years people have been updating and investing in their homes, so people get a little more bang for their buck,” says Realtor Lara Teague of North Eastern Group Realty.

1960s-era homes and tree-lined streets
Narrow streets and sidewalks weave throughout the acreage of Imperial Gardens, forming cul-de-sacs 8 miles from downtown. Neatly spaced homes occupy quarter-acre lots, a more generous amount of land than buyers would find closer to the city. “It’s a little bit of an older neighborhood and the lots are larger than the newer neighborhoods,” says Teague. The neighborhood is comprised of ranch-style and split-level homes, most offering attached garages and private driveways, two perks typical of Fort Wayne’s suburbs. A standard three-bedroom home can be found selling for between $175,000 and $250,000.

Flooding in Fort Wayne
