Glenbrook Square Mall is a big deal
Northcrest is loaded with options for convenient shopping and dining. “There is a lot of retail within walking distance to Northcrest, which greatly benefits residents,” says Walborn. Department stores, restaurants and grocery stores comprise the Northcrest Shopping Center and Glenbrook Square Mall, situated just south of the neighborhood. Locals can browse décor at HomeGoods and shop for clothing for the whole family at Macy’s. The local Aldi and Kroger have the grocery essentials covered. Glenbrook Square Mall is a short drive south and offers some two dozen retail outlets for weekend perusing. Folks can grab dinner at one of the Mall’s featured restaurants, like P. F. Chang’s or Red Robin.A day at Franke Park and the Children's Zoo
Although Northcrest’s actual green spaces are confined to homeowners’ back yards, folks don’t need to go far for parks and recreation. Franke Park provides natural open space 5 miles away, showcasing looping hiking trails and fishing spots on its sprawling 340 acres. It is also home to hundreds of wild animals, at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo. Less than 5 miles in the other direction lie the golf course and splash pads in Shoaff Park along the St. Joseph River. Downtown Fort Wayne is where folks attend the Fort Wayne Tin Caps Class A baseball games at the Parkview Field Stadium and discover artwork in the Fort Wayne Museum of Art.Predictable, yet cozy Ranch-styles populate Northcrest's streets
Streets feature well-kept lawns and short driveways leading up to established homes. Built primarily in the 1950s and 1960s, Northcrest’s ranch-style dwellings are steeped in minimal traditionalism with simple accents. Some take inspiration from Greek Revivals, with columns and shutters, for extra flair. “The ranch style is popular here,” says Walborn. “You’ll also find attached garages or larger detached garages are common in the neighborhood.” The median square footage for single-family homes in Northcrest is 1,300, at a median price of $165,000, well below the national average. Homes generally sell for between $140,000 and $270,000 for three bedrooms and one to two bathrooms. The high end of this range yields an extra bedroom. “Bigger homes are selling for a lot more money,” says Walborn, “but so are smaller ones.” Homes in Northcrest typically don’t stay on the market for more than eight days.Short drives to many places
“Convenience is key in Northcrest,” Walborn says. “You can get downtown within 10 minutes, to the airport in 25 minutes, and it’s accessible to the rest of Fort Wayne.” The four-mile, 10-minute commute can be achieved by car, but a Citilink bus ride takes about half an hour. Interstate 69 passes to the north, and U.S. Highway 27 splits the region leading south toward downtown and a junction with Interstate 469, toward Fort Wayne International Airport.Heading to class at Fort Wayne's Schools
