Shaded, walkable blocks of homes in Poplar
Poplar's sidewalk-lined streets are dotted with old oaks and maples. Simple Craftsman styles blend with basic bungalows in different states of repair. Cottages from the early 20th century are also prevalent. Homes start around $23,000 and climb to $200,000, with the low end representing heavily damaged or neglected properties. Prices are significantly lower than both the national average and the million-dollar condominiums downtown. The community’s time-worn fixer-uppers are a positive for potential investors and first-time buyers willing to put in the work. Others look for the less common turn-key listings that don't stick around for long before finding new owners.A day at McCulloch Park
Poplar residents are no more than a third of a mile from McCulloch Park, the local green space. A large, historic pavilion anchors its weblike layout of paved walkways. This park hosts a summer farmers market and serves as a gathering spot for community events. There’s also Miner Playground, a dog-friendly spot to bring the kids.Fort Wayne Community School District

Town meetings and events are also posted on the page, which is a resource for those who would like to be involved. Poplar is also part of the region's Packard 2030 community development plan – a comprehensive blueprint for Fort Wayne's southwestern corner, slated for completion in 2030. "With the plan will come a ton of investment in community parks, sidewalks and signage," says Ruhl. A few highlights include infrastructure updates, environmental preservation initiatives and public art investments.Walking, biking and driving around Fort Wayne

"The medical field is number one in the region." Lutheran Hospital has a downtown location and a second roughly 5 miles away via a direct route on Jefferson Boulevard. The Fort Wayne International Airport is less than 10 miles south, a 15-minute ride without major traffic delays. Citilink bus stops are also available on Taylor Street and Fairfield Avenue to connect residents with downtown shops and eateries. A bus ride takes about 22 minutes.Global cuisine and community spaces
Residents can walk no more than a half-mile to Fairfield Avenue for a bite to eat. For Vietnamese food, there’s Banh Mi Pho. This little spot is known for its ramen bowls and bubble tea. Shigs in Pit Barbecue serves brisket and other Southern staples from a casual, over-the-counter setting. There’s more to come for this little neighborhood, evidenced by the new Electric Works campus a quarter-mile north. Residents can walk or ride their bikes to this multi-use workspace, which doubles as office spaces and a food hall for local vendors. Those wanting a farm-to-table kind of experience might stop here in lieu of a supermarket chain. Alternatively, there’s George’s International Market, which has the usual meats, produce and baked goods.Crime and potential flooding
