Learn more about the neighborhood at Como Fest
A good time can be had at events like the annual 4th of July Parade and Como Fest, which celebrates the neighborhood's historically Black Heritage and aims to unite generations through its motto, "One Community, One Love." This cultural pride is continued through the Juneteenth Commem-Art-ration at the community center, celebrating African art history, preceding the Lake Como Celebration: Food From the Soul, a gathering with authentic African cuisine.Meet the neighbors at Como Community Center
The neighborhood's centerpiece is Lake Como Park, surrounding the big fishing pond. On Lake Como Drive, Butternut Hickory and American Beech trees set the natural backdrop to this community park, where the summer is filled with locals fishing for largemouth bass, playing disc golf, biking, hanging out with the dogs or playing sports under the sun. On Horne Street, Como Community Center is a beacon of light for neighbors, organizing Ice-cream socials to help residents with tutoring, cancer screenings, job fairs and outreach. For more recreation, The Blok Climbing Co appeals to indoor rock climbers on West Vickery Boulevard.Bigger lots near the lake in Como
The Lone Star can be spotted strolling through the wide residential streets with sidewalks in a grid pattern where older housing styles mix with homes. There are railroad tracks to the south of Como. Though street parking is common, paved driveways lead to neutral-colored, minimal traditional craftsman bungalows and ranch-style houses with attached garages. Some homes are within walking distance of parks, schools, corner stores and the community center. Many of these properties were built in the early to mid-1900s and required a bit of TLC, and the price ranges from $110,000 for a home needing renovation to $340,000 for brand new constructions. Additionally, Horne Street has been the sight of revitalization efforts since 2017 and has received grant funding to improve street safety.Bring a big appetite to Drew's Place Soulfood
Como is a primarily residential community, but it's close to places to shop and dine and home to a few local favorites. Drew's Place Soulfood on Curzon Avenue has seen many neighbors grow up since the late 1980s, with its homestyle cooking only found in the South. Galligaskin's is a block down and is an old-school sub shop. Small businesses include Evidence Barber, Beauty & Braids Shop on Kilpatrick Avenue, and A & J's Barber Shop on Horne Street, which have seen dozens of locals in their chairs. Also found here is Como Food Mart for quick groceries, while Tom Thumb is a mile away. "It's a great place for people to live because it's also just off the Camp Bowie area," Wall says.Fort Worth Independent School District is graded a B-minus
Families with children may be a part of the Fort Worth Independent School District and are within walking distance of The Leadership Academy at Como Elementary on Horne Street. Students may advance to William Monning Middle School and Arlington Heights High School, with all the schools garnering a C-plus or above. The high school offers advanced academies and gold seal programs in art, trade and STEM-centered programs.Access to bus stops and heading downtown
Como is a car-dependent community; however, bus stops are found throughout the neighborhood run by Fort Worth's Trinity Metro System. Como is well connected, bordered by Interstate 30, Camp Bowie Boulevard and Chisholm Trail Parkway, getting locals to downtown Fort Worth in 15 minutes, depending on traffic. Como is 15 miles from Fort Worth Meacham International Airport and 4 miles from Medical City Fort Worth.Coming from a place that cares
Como's heart is in its neighbors, who have created organizations and programs and advocated for funding for the neighborhood revitalization. Vital bridges in Como include the Lake Como's Neighborhood Advisory Council. In July 2023, a mass shooting devastated Como and the council and several churches like the Como First Baptist Church, were points of contact to mourn and advocate against gun violence, ensuring this is no reflection of the community at large and often violence occurs from outsiders of Como. Como Lions Heart is a non-profit organization created by Carol Brown, a long-time resident of Como who wanted to bring resources to her neighbors. Many funds were raised during the Taste of Soul Fundraising Gala, held for several years and even catered by Como's own Drew's Place.
