With the continuous growth and expansion of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, it's becoming increasingly difficult to find serene, rural neighborhoods like Garden Acres. While it might be situated off busy Interstate 35, the community feels much more secluded than its neighboring cities. "There are a lot of trees and fields wherever you look," says Cynthia Sturns, a Realtor with Northern Crain Realty who has several years of experience in the Metroplex. "You really do feel tucked away, and it feels very country and homey. You almost forget you're right off the interstate." Garden Acres is a hop-skip-jump from Fort Worth and Dallas, but locals enjoy the conveniences of nearby Burleson more regularly. "You also have several big employers along I-35," Sturns says. "So, not only are you living quietly between big cities and a charming downtown area, but you aren't making a long commute like you would in an even more rural area of Texas."
Garden Acres
Homes
Many of the houses in Garden Acres are ranch-style homes and farmhouses set on large lots in rural areas. Large front porches, barns or workshops often contribute to the neighborhood's rural charm. According to Dana Kilgore, a local Realtor with Insight Realty Network, the larger properties becoming available are a significant draw for the neighborhood. "Not only is it desirable, but it's also worth it. Land always appreciates," Kilgore says. Garden Acres is no exception to the overall growth of the DFW Metroplex. Subdivisions have popped up with new Craftsman homes built close together on streets lined with sidewalks. Each residence shares some variation of the same neutral-colored vinyl siding and stone. Spacious built-in garages are commonplace, often with Wi-Fi-enabled doors. Generally, home prices start at around $300,000 and top off at $400,000, depending on acreage and square footage.
Schools
Students in Garden Acres might attend Ann Brock Elementary School and Nick Kerr Middle School. Brock Elementary serves prekindergarten to fifth grade and is rated a B overall by Niche. The school has an after-school program that offers tutoring and physical activity for students from the end of the school day until 6 p.m. Nick Kerr Middle School holds a B-plus Niche score. Centennial High School is rated a B-plus overall by Niche. It has several clubs and organizations for students, including a clay target shooting team and a bass fishing team.
Parks
Golf lovers will enjoy the proximity to Southern Oaks Golf & Tennis Club, an 18-hole championship course full of oak and pecan trees and natural water hazards. The course provides a scenic and challenging round for golfers of all skill levels. Tennis fans can bring a racket and play on one of the 11 lighted courts. The USTA has named the club an Outstanding Facility. Burleson is just a short drive south on Interstate 35 for more recreation opportunities and has several popular parks. Bailey Lake Park is a hot spot for fishing and hiking next to the Hidden Creek Golf Course on West Hidden Creek Parkway. The Burleson Recreation Center is a great place to swim or play soccer. It also has an indoor pool, fitness equipment and basketball courts. Roughly 19 miles east, the Alpine Shooting Range and Lake Arlington offer other outdoor activities such as kayaking, boating and fly fishing.
Shopping and Dining
Just because Garden Acres is more rural than other spots in the Metroplex doesn't mean residents have to be far from daily conveniences. Local and chain restaurants can be found along I-35W before Burleson, including Rudy's Country Store and Bar-B-Q. This laid-back chain started in San Antonio and has spread throughout the state, offering pit-smoked meat such as brisket, ribs and turkey. Locals enjoy the convenience of the drive-thru when in a hurry or at a picnic table when enjoying a meal with friends and family. Other chain restaurants, such as Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen and Chipotle, can be found down the highway in the Burleson Town Center. "Burleson is still growing," Sturns says. "But they already have a wonderful selection of restaurants and eateries. There are big brands and mom and pops, like Babe's Chicken." Babe's Chicken offers Southern comfort staples, like fried chicken and collard greens, in a rustic yet whimsical setting off Burleson's South Main Street. Grocery stores such as Sam's Club and Albertsons and a large movie theater also share the Burleson Town Center.
Events
Garden Acres is within minutes of some of Texas' biggest festivals and events in Fort Worth. January brings the Stock Show and Rodeo to the city. Fort Worth also hosts the largest fireworks show in North Texas during Fort Worth Fourth. Summer also means locals can cool off at Rockin' the River, a music festival hosted at Texas' only waterfront stage.
Transportation
Garden Acres has no direct public transportation system; however, an interurban commuter bus provides a direct line between nearby Burleson and other neighboring cities, including Cleburne, Joshua and Fort Worth. Nearby highways and major roadways include Interstate 35 and I-30. Fort Worth is 13 miles away, and Burleson is 6 miles away via I-35 W. Residents can also reach Arlington and Dallas within 22 and 41 miles via I-30 East, respectively. Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport is roughly 36 miles north of town for out-of-state travel. I-35 W also provides direct access to Texas Health Huguley Hospital, only 2 miles away.
