Country living near Northern California’s redwood forests
Sun-drenched country roads, starry nights and views of rolling hillsides greet the residents of Hydesville, a rural community at the edge of Humboldt County's sprawling redwood forests. It sits just east of the town of Fortuna, about 18 miles off the Pacific coast. It's primarily residential, with little more than a market, a fire department, an elementary school, a community church and a post office at the center of town. “Hydesville is where people go if they want more acreage, but still want to be close to Fortuna,” says Realtor Eliza Proctor of Re/Max Humboldt Realty, who has lived and worked in the area since 2017. “It’s a lot sunnier and warmer there than if you live closer to the coast.”
Protected forests, Eel River and a private golf course
The community is just south of Headwaters Forest Reserve, a protected woodland that’s home to thousands of coastal redwood trees and endangered animals like the northern spotted owl. At nearly 7,500 acres, hikers will have plenty of natural scenery to explore. Also nearby is the Eel River, a popular place for kayaking, swimming and fishing for steelhead and salmon. Avid golfers can tee up at the Redwood Empire Golf & Country Club, which borders Hydesville’s western edge. This private 18-hole golf course offers greens and fairways that wind through scenic redwood-covered terrain.
