Bay Vista offers midcentury homes near parks, schools and trails
Surrounded by local waterways and bayside scenery, Bay Vista lives up to its name. Residents live on beachy avenues of Foster City, perched between the San Francisco Bay shoreline and a manmade lagoon popular for sailing and fishing. Built in the 1960s and 1970s, it offers classic midcentury-style homes, four community parks and access to the Bay Trail. It’s less than 2 miles from a local shopping plaza and sits just north of major tech and biotech companies in Silicon Valley, making it a popular neighborhood for commuters. “The big draw is being so close to the bay, and being close to all the outdoor activities,” says Realtor Rumana Jabeen of Keller Williams Peninsula Estates, who works in Foster City. “But second to that, it’s the parks and schools. This area attracts a lot of younger people and families with young kids, and you’ve got top-notch schools and a lot of neighborhood parks.”

Bay Vista homes include ranch-style houses and midcentury moderns
The neighborhood offers a mix of ranch-style homes, midcentury moderns and modest townhomes built in the late 1960s and early 1970s. “The beauty of Bay Vista is the diversity of housing," Jabeen says. "If you’re a fan of midcentury modern architecture, there are Eichler homes. If you need more space, there are two-story homes with large interiors. And for older people who may not want stairs, there are plenty of single-story homes and ranch-styles. You’ve got a lot of choices." Many homes feature bright landscaping and small backyards with enough room for a little garden. Dozens of homes situated along the waterfront have private docks, providing both views of the water and a place to launch kayaks and small sailboats. Prices for single-family homes range from around $1.7 million to $3 million, with townhomes selling for $1.3 million to $1.7 million. There are several apartment buildings in the neighborhood for those who want less upkeep.

Neighborhood parks offer beaches, playgrounds and bay views
Parks and trails are a major perk for Bay Vista residents. “Foster City has some large parks, but there are also so many small, neighborhood parks. It’s so wonderful for kids who want to get outside and play, or for people walking their dogs or jogging,” Jabeen says. Among the most popular is Gull Park, a waterside park with a sandy beach, grassy picnic areas and a playground. Killdeer Park is a linear park with a walking path, playground and easy access from residential streets. Those looking for a cool bay breeze can head to Bridgeview Park, which sits along the shoreline next to the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge. It’s also an access point for the Bay Trail, a lengthy Bay Area pathway that’s been a hit with bikers, runners and walkers since its inception. It covers about 350 miles, and when it’s complete, it will be over 500 miles long.

The neighborhood is zoned for the San Mateo-Foster City School District, home to some of the highest-rated public schools on the Peninsula. “It’s a big attraction for people moving here,” Jabeen says. Audubon Elementary School is in the heart of the neighborhood, within walking and biking distance for most kids. It gets an A rating from Niche. The next step is Bowditch Middle School, which also gets an A rating, followed by A-plus-rated San Mateo High School. The high school is known for its award-winning biotechnology program — one of the first in the state.
