Despite what its name suggests, Four Square Mile is a little more than half the size, filled with residential neighborhoods, commercial corridors and green spaces. Growth in the 1980s led to area-wide new developments, which continue to serve today’s population of about 23,000 people. The unincorporated city sits roughly 8 miles southeast of downtown Denver and about 7 miles southwest of Aurora, giving the suburban enclave ample access to retail and employers. “Four Square Mile is attractive to younger people who are just starting their careers. The area is within proximity to many employment centers, including medical centers to the east, downtown Denver to the West and the Denver Tech center to the south,” says Gretchen Ricehill, Project Specialist for Arapahoe County’s Public Works and Development Department, who is working on the Four Square Mile Subarea Plan.

Single-family homes and townhouses from the 1980s
The Indian Creek and Dayton Triangle neighborhoods have a wide range of housing types, from traditional multi-story homes to bi-levels, ranchers and remodeled condos. A commercial corridor along East Iliff Avenue is one of many shopping and dining outlets in Four Square Mile. The Central Park Shopping Center has multiple international markets for groceries, plus a handful of small businesses. Local eateries in the area include a pizzeria, a sports bar and an Afghani restaurant. Along South Parker Road, there’s a Walmart and multiple international places to eat. Farther south about one mile from the city is Village on the Park shopping mall. The area is surrounded by chain restaurants, fast-food options and local bars. About three miles northeast of the city along South Havanna Street are even more retailers and big box stores within The Gardens on Havanna. The area has three grocery stores.

Four Square Mile has three public parks managed by Arapahoe County’s Open Spaces Department. The Cheyenne-Arapaho Park, also known as the Tsistsistas-Hinono’ei Park, honors the Cheyenne and Arapahoe tribes through public art. Lastly, the Cherry Creek Country Club sits at the city’s southernmost tip with its 18-hole golf course. Multiple regional trails meander through Four Square Mile. The High Line Canal is a 71-mile linear park with 27 pathway segments – one of which goes through the city. “It is one of the neighborhood’s most significant cultural and recreational assets,” Ricehill says. There’s also the Cherry Creek Trail, which follows along the creek bend and is popular with cyclists.
Outdoor enthusiasts in Four Square Mile enjoy access to regional trails like the High Line Canal, a 71-mile linear park, and the Cherry Creek Trail, a favorite among cyclists. These scenic pathways connect residents to nature while providing great routes for walking, running, and biking.

Four Square Mile is served by the Cherry Creek School District, which enrolls over 53,000 students across 64 schools. According to Niche, Cherry Creek earns an A grade and is ranked the No.1 school district in the Denver Area. Newer neighborhoods in Four Square Mile have sidewalks that promote a walkable community. “As part of updating the 2005 Subarea plan, we are looking for opportunities to improve both pedestrian and bicycle systems,” Ricehill says. For public transportation, Colorado’s Regional Transportation District (RTD) has local bus lines with stops throughout the city. South Parker Road, known as Colorado State Highway 83, is the city’s main thoroughfare and connects to Colorado State Highway 30 for commuting into Aurora. The Denver International Airport is 23 miles away for commercial flying.
Arapahoe County’s community events
Although Four Square Mile lacks a central organization, there are still plenty of reasons for the community to come together. “Residents of Four Square Mile have the opportunity to participate in events and festivals that are available throughout the metro area, Ricehill says. "Arapahoe County puts on a variety of signature events throughout the year, including a chalk art and wine festival, the annual Arapahoe County Fair, a Halloween trick-or-treating event and more.”
Varying weather and crime
While the unincorporated city does not have its own law enforcement, it contracts with the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office. Colorado Crime Statistics have seen a 21% increase in the number of violent crime cases for the office from 2020 to 2024, and a 23% decrease in the number of property crimes. Four Square Mile’s four seasons include hot summers and cold winters, where the low is around 20 degrees, and the high is in the 90s.
