Fox Crossing brings accessibility to the suburbs
Of all the villages that comprise the Fox River Valley, Fox Crossing is one of the quieter, more residential options. “There are two things that bring people to this part of the valley: the lower taxes and the location,” says Coldwell Banker Realtor Jill Rooney, who has 35 years of experience selling in the region. “Because it’s a village instead of a city, you don’t have to pay city tax. Also, it’s a more remote spot for the Fox River Valley.” With Little Lake Butte des Morts, shopping centers and the bigger city of Appleton all within a quick drive, Fox Crossing blends suburbia and natural landscapes with urban convenience.
Scenic hiking trails and green spaces for fishing, boating and more
Though it’s close to big-city amenities, Fox Crossing also offers plenty of activities in nature. Numerous parks feature open green space and public facilities, and Lake Winnebago and Little Lake Butte des Morts are fully recreational. Fritse Park, situated along the shores of Little Lake Butte des Morts, has boat launches, kayak rentals and picnic areas. The Trestle Trail begins in the park and cuts across the water via the Friendship Bridge. The trail is popular for biking and fishing and has a shaded pavilion overlooking the water at its midway point. O’Hauser Park has various athletic fields, courts, a disc golf course and wooded hiking paths.
Single-family homes and condos fill the community
Buyers can choose from newer suburban communities and homes along the waterfront. “A lot of it is separated into subdivisions,” Rooney says. “It’s not rural, so you will have smaller tracts of land, and neighbors are closer together and tight-knit.” The newer developments have a uniform layout on quiet cul-de-sacs. Other parts of the area have more variety in housing styles and lot sizes. Single-family architecture ranges from New Traditional properties and Colonial Revivals to waterfront cabins and ranch-style homes. Condo options are available in complexes and detached units. The overall median price is $330,000, slightly below the national figure. Houses needing renovations sell for as low as $40,000, and properties on sizeable lots or the water may reach $800,000 to $1.2 million.
Students are divided into two school districts
Children may enroll in the Menasha Joint School District, which scores a B-plus on Niche, or the Neenah Joint School District, which earns an A-minus. Students west of the lake attend Neenah schools, which have the best athletic programs in Winnebago County, according to Niche. Menasha schools serve children east of the lake, and Niche ranks it the most diverse district in the Appleton area. St. Mary Catholic High is an A-rated private option in Fox Crossing. University of Wisconsin Oshkosh at Fox Cities is next door, and residents can visit the Barlow Planetarium on campus.
Big-box stores and restaurants within reach
Though Fox Crossing has a suburban feel, all of the valley’s amenities are close by. “You’re within 10 minutes of shopping and all the conveniences,” Rooney says. About 3 miles north, Fox River Mall is the largest hub for shopping and dining nearby, with dozens of retailers, including Macy’s and Target. Big-box stores, such as Costco, Walmart and Woodman’s Food Market, also surround the mall. A few restaurants operate off American Drive, like Holidays Pub & Grill, which is popular for its outdoor patio, and Wissota Chophouse, a regional chain.
Quick connections to Green Bay and Milwaukee
The most prominent thoroughfare nearby is Interstate 41, which intersects with U.S. Route 10. I-41 leads to Green Bay, 35 miles northeast, and Milwaukee, about 105 miles southeast. Appleton International Airport is directly outside Fox Crossing and services private and commercial flights.
