Frankfort, Indiana is a small city of nearly 17,000 people is located less than 50 miles northwest of Indianapolis. Frankfort's downtown is home to historic buildings, with the most iconic being "Old Stoney," a former 1892 sandstone schoolhouse that resembles a castle, turret and all. Today, the Clinton County Historical Society and Museum, as well as some city government offices call Old Stoney home. In the distance, the Clinton County Courthouse's dome and clock are also visible, while a short walk down Main Street produces walls of murals depicting this city's colorful past. Once known as the "gem city" for its bright lights during the introduction of electricity, today, Frankfort is better known for its role in manufacturing. The city is home to two Frito-Lay plants, which jointly employ more than 1,300 people, as well as the Donaldson Company, an air filter supplier, that adds around 400 jobs to the local workforce.

Annual festivals celebrate Hispanic community, hot dogs
There are two big annual festivals in Frankfort – The Hot Dog Festival and the Hispanic Heritage Festival. The Hot Dog Festival features a hot dog eating contest, live entertainment on three stages, a street vault and BMX shows. Plus, there’s a dachshund race, as well as prizes for the longest and shortest dachshund – the high school’s mascot is also a dachshund. “The town mascot is a hot dog,” Hundley says. “It’s very silly, and everyone likes to go around and find the mascot and take their picture with Frankie.”
The Hispanic Heritage Festival honors Frankfort's multicultural population. “I see different cultures working together and supporting each other, here,” says Hundley. The festival features live music, dancing, traditional outfits, a flag parade and plenty of vendors. “There’s really good food and food trucks,” Hundley says. “It’s become a nice cultural event that people are excited for.”
Smaller neighborhood parks and big petting zoos in Frankfort
Frankfort has no shortage of green spaces. For those looking to get outdoors, there are a handful of small neighborhood parks like Circle Park, which has a playground and basketball court, and Dorner Park, which has a gazebo, playground and horseshoe pits. Larger city parks like TPA Park, offer a pool, baseball diamonds, tennis, basketball, horseshoe and volleyball courts, plus a petting zoo with a wide variety of animals. The parks are popular despite the weather, with summers in Frankfort being hot and humid, and winters cold and snowy. This area is also at risk of tornadoes, though the storms tend not to be as frequent or intense as in Tornado Alley states.

No shortage of Mexican grocers, restaurants in Frankfort
Due in part to the large Hispanic community in Frankfort, there are an abundance of Mexican restaurants and markets to visit. Fresitas is an artisan ice cream shop downtown that also serves Mexican desserts like churros and paletas, plus entrees like tortas and elote. Tienda Michocan is a Mexican grocery store that sells fresh meat, produce and a variety of grocery items. Frankfort also has a barbecue restaurant, a few pizza spots, and assorted cafes. For groceries, there’s a Walmart and an Aldi.

State highway connects Frankfort drivers to Indianapolis
State Highway 39, which connects drivers to Indianapolis, runs through Frankfort. The nearest commercial airport is Indianapolis International Airport, 50 miles away. IU Health Frankfort Hospital, which is partnered with the Indiana University School of Medicine, is located right in the city.
