Frankfort is a quiet town with summer excitement
In the Mohawk Valley, east of Utica, is the town of Frankfort, a rural area bounded by the Mohawk River and Erie Canal to the north and farmland to the south. Richard Elthorp is a local and the president of the Herkimer County Fair Association, a volunteer-based nonprofit that has managed events at the Herkimer Fairgrounds for 75 years. “It’s a sleepy little town,” Elthorp says. “There’s a bunch of various bake shops, great Italian food. ... It’s all small-town industry." Things may be quiet in the cooler months, but the town comes alive in the summer for annual events like the Herkimer County Fair. Frankfort offers a relaxed place to live, sandwiched between Utica and Herkimer, while also keeping the community engaged with events that draw people from out of town. "Frankfort has a great bunch of people," Elthorp says. "We give back to our community."

Classic home designs and lower taxes in Frankfort
Colonial Revivals and Queen Anne-inspired homes on large lots have sold for $200,000 to $500,000. Homes that sell for less than $200,000 are often Craftsman bungalows or manufactured homes in the village. Some properties with at least 5 acres and large homes ranged from $600,000 to $730,000. Residents might live in the village or in the town of Frankfort. Homes inside the village have public water and sewer access, while those in the township run on well water and septic tank systems. Elthorp also mentions Frankfort’s taxes are lower than neighboring Ilion, because Remington Arms, a major employer in Ilion, closed in 2020.

The town looks forward to the Herkimer County Fair
Most of the action in town is thanks to the Herkimer County Fair Association. “The fair started in the late 1800s,” Elthorp says. “The third week in August, we have our Herkimer County Fair. It starts on a Tuesday afternoon and goes on to Sunday.” The fair will have its 75th anniversary in 2026, marking 75 years of local celebration in Frankfort. Visitors can enjoy tractor pulls, demolition derbies, animal showcases and carnival rides. “We’ve got people throughout the Mohawk Valley who come and help us, with whatever their specialty is,” Elthorp says. For the rest of the year, residents might volunteer or participate in other recurring events, from the world’s largest garage sale in June to the Mineral Show in July. The New York State Trapper Convention is another August favorite.
Football champs attend Frankfort-Schuyler Junior/Senior High
Frankfort is a part of the Frankfort-Schuyler Central School District, which is rated C by Niche. Frankfort-Schuyler Elementary earns a C-minus. On the same campus, Frankfort-Schuyler Junior/Senior High gets a B-minus. The varsity football team had to cancel its 2021 season due to a lack of participation, but the program has rebounded since. The team won the state Section III championship in 2024, defeating long-time rival Pembroke High. Some parents apply to send their kids to Utica Academy of Science Charter School, rated B-minus, for prekindergarten through 12th grade.

Convenient access to Utica, Herkimer and Ilion
State Route 5S flows through Frankfort, connecting to nearby Ilion and all the way to Utica. “Utica has the hospitals,” Elthorp says. “Herkimer has Bassett, a bunch of different outpatient centers, and things like that. We’re about a half hour from the Baseball Hall of Fame, about an hour from the Adirondacks and Old Forge. We’re an hour to Syracuse and an hour to Albany for major shopping.” Frankfort has a Tractor Supply distribution center and an Amazon Warehouse for jobs, though some people commute 10 minutes to Herkimer or 20 minutes to Utica for work. The Syracuse Hancock International Airport is 64 miles away via Interstate 90, a toll road. The village has places of worship, notably Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church, recognized for its stone exterior and tall stairs.

Sailing from the marina and teeing off at Pine Hills Golf Course
While the Herkimer County Fair is a major event, there are things to do in the meantime. Elthorp highlights the Frankfort Marina, which becomes the venue for the Frankfort HarborFest every September. Hilltop Athletic Park has athletic fields used by youth leagues and impromptu games. Pine Hills Golf Course is a third-generation family business that offers public access to an 18-hole course, though members get additional benefits. The Frankfort Free Library organizes indoor fun, from art activities to visits from the Veggie Van Mobile Market.

Beers at Heelpath Brewing Co. and fresh treats at Friendly Bake Shop
Frankfort has locally owned restaurants instead of fast-food chains. Heelpath Brewing Co. is the newest addition to the area, a brewery near the marina that offers handcrafted beers made with locally sourced ingredients. For a quick bite, there’s 1886 Prime and Fratello's Pizzeria down the street. The Knight Spot keeps a rotating menu of sundae flavors served from April to October, and Friendly Bake Shop stocks freshly baked desserts and bread in glass display cases. Meats on Main is a butcher shop and deli, though anyone who needs more grocery options goes to the Aldi in Ilion or the Hannaford in Utica.

Frankfort is prepared for potential flooding and snow
Because the Mohawk River and Erie Canal are close to Frankfort, there’s a chance of flooding during heavy rain. “There was some flooding years ago, but they turned around and did the creek that runs on the backside of Frankfort, but no major, major flooding,” Elthorp says. “They go above and beyond to maintain everything in Frankfort. ... You’ll have a snowstorm, and our boys are keeping everything good and clean, salted and sanded. Then you go over to the next town, which is Ilion, and it’s a winter wonderland.”
