A mining community-turned modern Colorado suburb

With views of the Rocky Mountains to the west and the bustling atmosphere of Denver to the south, the small city of Frederick has a close-knit community feel and has seen rapid growth in recent years. “Frederick is part of what locals call the larger Carbon Valley community that also includes Firestone and Dacono,” says Jenny Hart, a local Realtor with Keller Williams. “It’s a close-knit area where people know their neighbors. We have a rural feel but are just about 30 minutes from Denver, Fort Collins and Boulder, so it’s a great area for those want a quieter community with easy access to the city.”

The city was established in 1907 in the center of Carbon Valley, where coal mines attracted Italian immigrant workers in the early 20th century. Today, Frederick is home to over 17,000 residents. With a continually growing population, new constructions are constantly in the works, bringing in a projected 500 to 1,000 new residents each year.

Health systems, education and manufacturing are some of the most prominent industries in the area, with employers such as the St. Vrain Valley School District, Production Control Services and Sparton Medical Systems of Colorado.

Hot air balloons and community heritage

While Frederick has grown exponentially over the past decade, it has maintained a small-town atmosphere. “One of the reasons I’ve stayed here over the years is the warm community feel,” says Hart. “Most people know their neighbors. I am friends with my hairdresser and know the waitresses at the restaurants in town. It’s just the kind of area where people stop to say hello and open doors for one another.”

The city hosts a handful of events throughout the year, including Miners Day, where the community comes together to celebrate its early mining days with a parade, music, a fireworks display and a vendor market. Every June, Frederick in Flight is a three-day festival that starts with dozens of hot air balloons lifting each morning. The event also includes a beer garden and family activities.
