Amenities and clubs anchor Wormans Mill
Wormans Mill in Frederick, Maryland, offers an active social scene that’s subdued compared to the downtown district 5 miles away. The neighborhood’s townhouse and single-family communities are outfitted with communal amenities, such as pools and a putting green, and groups that include dinner clubs, book clubs and pickleball groups. However, it’s a different vibe than downtown, where some bars are open past 1 a.m. and cars occasionally pack the narrow streets. “We find a lot of people who live downtown and don’t want the bustle tend to move to Wormans Mill,” says Bach Real Estate broker Jennifer Grove, who lives in Frederick. The neighborhood backs up to the shaded bank of the Monocacy River, providing some seclusion. Still, residents live within 5 miles of shopping centers, downtown and two interstates.

Less than a mile from the residential areas, shopping centers have Walmart, Lowe’s Home Improvement and Wegmans grocery store. There are also more than a dozen chain eateries, which fits with the city’s collection of corporate and local restaurants, Grove says. “You could eat your way through Frederick.” Military and private medical work employs more than 10,000 people in the county. Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research and other medical-focused employers are based at Riverside Technology Park 2 miles from Wormans Mill.

Paddlers and boaters hit the Monocacy River
Most townhouse communities were built around pocket parks. They don’t have many amenities, but their shaded lawns and trails are a short walk away for residents. An abundance of sidewalks makes it easy to walk through each community. Wormans Mill borders the Monocacy River, a narrow waterway kayakers and canoers can explore. The river winds to the south side of the neighborhood, where boaters can launch from Riverside Park. Nearly a mile of trails ramble alongside a creek and through tree groves.

Distinct townhouse styles
Townhouses are the most common type of home, and styles vary from one cluster of homes to the next. Many have steep Tudor-inspired roofs, a style that matches the first home in Wormans Mill: a house built by German settler Jacob Stoner in the 1740s. Greek-influenced columns and barn-like garage doors are also on display. “The builder didn’t make anything that’s a square box,” Grove says. Prices vary from the low $300,000s to the low $900,000s. There are groups of detached single-family homes too. Mostly built since the ‘90s, these houses were designed with colonial and French country features. Homeowners associations take care of the lawns and grounds, Grove explains. “You can live in a single-family home or a duplex and have no yard work.” Houses generally aren’t age-restricted, but there are apartment communities exclusively for residents who are 55 or older. Single-family price tags range from $450,000 to $1.2 million.
