Freeburg is surrounded by forests, lakes and streams
About a 30-minute drive southeast of Saint Louis , Freeburg is a village of about 4,300. Surrounded by green spaces with countless lakes and ponds, this area was once barely noticed by anyone uninterested in fishing or camping. "Fifty years ago, Freeburg was just a place you passed through on the way to Belleville ," says Stephen Ellerbrake, a broker with Keller Williams Pinnacle. Today, Ellerbrake says, the village stands out as one of the largest in the area, with services and shopping utilized by surrounding communities. "It supports a lot of businesses and a lot of churches," he says. Freeburg has over half a dozen churches, including Catholic, Baptist and Lutheran denominations. Despite this growth, Freeburg is still appreciated for its proximity to peaceful outdoor recreation.
Newer subdivisions are on the outskirts
At the center of the community is a large selection of midcentury homes that range from $120,000 to $250,000. Lots here are generally a quarter-acre or smaller, laid out in a neat checkerboard pattern. Residential sidewalks lead to commercial zones along State Street, giving the area a level of walkability. "Everything's really tight and close by," says Ellerbrake. Turn-of-the-20th-century styles are also available, generally priced between $140,000 and $210,000. Newer subdivisions with 21st-century New Traditional homes are on Freeburg's outskirts, largely selling between $250,000 and $430,000.
