Freedom is farms, longstanding families and friendly
Settled between Green Bay and Appleton, Freedom is a small town that is slowly growing. Fields and farms fade into subdivisions with new construction and Freedom’s small town center with local restaurants and parks. “Most of us have lived here our whole lives,” says Dana McHugh, Town Clerk and Treasurer for the Town of Freedom. “We started as a small farming community, and some of that has dissipated, but it’s still a lot of the same families. We haven’t gotten to the city feeling yet.” While Freedom is home to many long-term residents, the community still welcomes newcomers. “You’re not bringing over plates of cookies,” McHugh says. “Over here in Wisconsin, you bring over a beer.” Freedom receives a Cap Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4.
Everyone in Freedom comes together for school sports
Students start at Freedom Elementary School, which receives a B from Niche. Freedom Middle School and Freedom High School share a campus, and both receive B-minus ratings. “We have an extremely well-followed athletics program,” McHugh says. “We’ll go to all the away games for the teams, and our away section is bigger than the home section.” The district also offers a live stream that residents can watch if they can’t catch away games.
2025 builds and ranch-style homes across Freedom on 1 to 3 acres
Ranch-style homes and New Traditionals built in the last year line Freedom’s wide streets. Trees in front yards add spots of color and shade. Paved driveways lead to attached two-car garages. Most properties offer between 1 and 3 acres and range from $300,000 to $680,000. Some custom builds on 3 to 10 acres are also available, though less common on the market. They start closer to $900,000 and range up to $1.8 million.
Community parks, golf courses and old-fashioned drive-in theaters
VFW Memorial Park is the town’s largest park. It includes many of the community’s sports amenities, like the baseball diamonds, skate park and tennis, basketball and volleyball courts. The area is also home to two golf courses. Fox Valley Golf Club is a private course with five sets of tees at each hole. Irish Waters Golf Club is open to the public. For date nights, locals head out to Field of Scenes, an old-fashioned drive-in theater. It plays recent releases and sells concessions that visitors can enjoy from their cars.
Restaurants owned and operated by Freedom residents
B’s Brew is owned and operated by a Freedom local. In addition to coffee, people can also order breakfast and sandwiches. Colonial House Supper Club’s menu is diverse, offering everything from seafood to chicken and steak dinners. Buzz’s Pub and Grill serves American food, like burgers and wings. It also has a lot of live music in the evenings. Sal’s Foods is the town’s grocery store. In Appleton, Piggly Wiggly is about 7 miles away.
Freedom is close to amenities in Appleton and Green Bay
County Road E and Wisconsin Route 55 both go through Freedom, linking it with Appleton and Green Bay. Appleton is closer, about 12 miles away, and is home to ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Appleton. Appleton International Airport is about 20 miles away. Meanwhile, Green Bay is 20 miles in the opposite direction. Prevea West De Pere Health Center is along the way, about 11 miles from Freedom. Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport is 13 miles away.
Freedom's fall Packers games and the annual Christmas parade
In addition to school sports, Freedom’s proximity to Green Bay means residents are hardcore Packers fans. “Sundays are sacred,” McHugh says. “Freedom jumps on that bandwagon because our school colors are green and gold.” In the winter, the Freedom Christmas Parade is a 30-year tradition, where locals enter the lighted parade floats and the town votes on the best ones.
