Small borough tucked beside the Lehigh River

Once a booming canal town, Freemansburg is now a residential borough with sidewalk-lined streets, community green spaces and local businesses along the banks of the Lehigh River. “This is a quaint, small town where everyone knows each other and is willing to help each other out,” says Jonathan Itterly, the Borough Manager of Freemansburg. “We’re also going through some interesting projects right now. We’re building a community amphitheater to host music shows and movie nights, and we have funding for a community center in Gerald C. Yob Community Park.” The borough is just east of downtown Bethlehem and located in the heart of the Lehigh Valley, with convenient commutes on the nearby Interstate 78.

Local eateries and convenient shopping centers

The borough’s Main Street runs parallel to the Lehigh River. “This year in June we’re doing a complete revitalization of Main Street,” Itterly says. “We’re widening the roadways, adding brick crosswalks and putting up string lighting across the streets that will change colors.” Cherry’s Caribbean Place is a take-out restaurant serving homestyle Jamaican foods, while Portugalia BBQ serves authentic Portuguese dishes in a laid-back dining room. Next to Gerald C. Yob Community Park, locals can gather in vinyl booths at Freemansburg Diner and enjoy comfort foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Residents can pick up groceries at the Stefko Shopping Center along Stefko Boulevard, which includes The Fresh Grocer.

Community park and miles of riverfront trails

Gerald C. Yob Community Park sits across the street from Freemansburg Elementary School and features a playground for kids to explore. Further down the road, the Freemansburg Bethlehem Township Athletic Association provides the community with several ballfields. Residents can also head to Main Street and hop on the D&L Trail at the Freemansburg Trailhead. The Bethlehem–Freemansburg section of the trail spans over 3 miles and offers views of the historic Bethlehem Steel site from across the Lehigh River. “I like to say Freemansburg has one of the nicest sections of the trail. It’s also a very popular spot for fishing. The canal is stocked with trout every year, which draws quite a crowd,” Itterly says. The borough is part of the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Canal Corridor, and locals can also walk by historic Lock No. 44, the last original lock tender's house along the canal. Over on Stefko Boulevard, Steel City Bowl and Brews is a trendy bowling alley complete with arcade games.
