Cape Cods and cottages on quiet, forested streets

The residential streets surrounding Main Street host classic cool-toned New England homes on small lots framed by trees and flowering shrubbery. Housing inventory is low, but when properties go on the market, buyers can find Colonial Revivals from the mid-20th century priced around $500,000. There are also New England cabins built in the 1950s that are priced around $250,000 and Cape Cods and Craftsman cottages from the 1970s priced between $350,000 and $450,000.

Hike along the coast at Tidebrook Preserve

Steps away from Freeport’s Main Street is Leon Gorman Park, a grassy outdoor area with hiking trails, a picnic pavilion, a fire pit and a small ice skating area. Dogs are allowed but bikes and strollers are not recommended since some of the trails are steep. Residents can step away from the bustling downtown and onto shaded nature trails that wind through fields and a tidal marsh at the Mast Landing Audubon Sanctuary. Tidebrook Preserve is positioned on the southeastern edge of the neighborhood and offers hikers with a well-marked trail system and views of the Harraseeket River.

Support local vendors at the Freeport Fall Festival

Every year, on the first weekend of October, the community gets together for the annual Freeport Fall Festival, a three-day festival on the L.L. Bean campus with New England artists, food, live music and kid-friendly activities. In November and December, “L.L. Bean’s Northern Lights event has decorations with Santa and reindeer, plus hot chocolate and a bunch of Christmas activities like ice skating,” Gendron says. In the warmer months, the community can meet for concerts and family movie nights at L.L. Bean’s Summer in the Park events.

Walk along Main Street or catch the Amtrak to Portland

Sidewalks make the residential streets walkable, though most residents also drive personal vehicles to commute to work easily. Amtrak’s Downeaster line, which operates from Boston to Brunswick, makes a stop in Downtown Freeport. Residents can also find several bus stops to catch the Greater Portland Metro, which travels southbound to Portland and northbound to Brunswick. Interstate 295 creates the neighborhood’s western border and takes residents 17 miles south to Portland.

A 16-foot-tall "Bean Boot" (and normal-sized pairs) at L.L. Bean’s flagship campus

Shaw’s and Bow Street Market serve residents’ grocery needs, but Freeport’s outdoor outlet shops are the neighborhood’s crown gem. “The vibe of Downtown Freeport is luxe, with outlet stores like North Face, Vineyard Vines, Banana Republic and L.L. Bean,” says Ciara Gendron, a childcare professional born and raised in central Maine. L.L. Bean’s flagship campus, which includes multiple buildings and an outdoor pavilion, is guarded by a 16-foot-tall version of the company’s famous “bean boot.” On top of retail shopping, Main Street hosts local restaurants. “Buck’s Naked BBQ is a great restaurant that serves brisket and pulled pork,” Gendron says. Locals can enjoy Maine’s best-known flavors with lobster rolls and blueberry pie from Linda Bean’s Maine Kitchen. For a pizza and a pint, residents can go to Brickyard Hollow Brewing Co. and swing by Wicked Whoopies for dessert.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
