South Freeport
Rural Neighborhood in Freeport, Maine
Cumberland County 04032
Cape Cods on small lots with garden landscaping and coastal views
South Freeport has a collection of winding, shaded streets and coastal roads, all of which feature older homes in New England styles. “The landscaping is really lovely — people take care of their homes,” says Mandy Wheeler, broker and owner of Maine-based Urban and Rural Real Estate, which has served the area for over a decade. The well-maintained homes also contribute to high demand for Freeport real estate. “The housing prices are noticeably higher than nearby towns since it’s more of a competitive area,” Hiat says. "We’re feeling that inventory crunch. You can’t find a house on the water without getting into the millions." On wooded lots located inland, homebuyers can find ranch-style homes and bungalows from the early to mid-1900s priced between $400,000 and $750,000. Waterfront Cape Cods from the mid-20th century are priced between $950,000 and $1.7 million.Swim, fish or boat along the rocky coast at Winslow Park
One of the most popular spaces to get outside is Winslow Memorial Park, which has picnic areas and a seasonal campground. Boaters can launch watercraft to explore Casco Bay, and residents may fish from the park's rocky jetties or take their kids to the playground. The camping area closes in the winter, but nature trails are open for hiking or cross-country skiing year-round. For a mile-long afternoon walk, locals can stroll Ridge Trail, a loop that meanders through the woods. The Brewer South Freeport Marine and the Harraseeket Yacht Club are both popular places to shelter sailboats on the river.Children attend A-rated schools in Freeport
Morse Street School, which has not yet been rated by Niche, serves children in grades prekindergarten through second. In third grade, students can advance to Mast Landing School, which earns an A rating from Niche. Freeport Middle School also earns an A rating, and Freeport High School scores a B-Plus. High school students may enroll in vocational programs to study fields like electrical technology, auto technology, culinary arts and digital media through Region 10 Technical High School. Parents may also choose to send their elementary school-aged students to L'Ecole Française du Maine, a French immersion private school in the neighborhood with an A-plus rating.Summer concerts at Winslow Park and large festivals downtown
On Thursday summer evenings, neighbors gather at Winslow Park for free concerts by the bay. “Freeport has some cool festivals that draw a lot of people. One of the best is the oyster festival in early summer,” Hiat says. Sea farms located all along the state’s coast have booths at the Maine Oyster Festival, where residents can also find local vendors selling pressed juice, artwork and artisanal cheese. During the first weekend of October, Downtown Freeport also hosts a three-day fall festival on the L.L. Bean campus, where live music fills the air, vendors sell seasonal snacks and artwork, and there are face paint and craft booths for kids. L.L. Bean’s Northern Lights event, which has festive lighting displays, mailboxes to send letters to the North Pole and a model train display, begins in mid-November and continues through the end of the year.Commuters drive 16 miles to Portland
While downtown Freeport has a walkable shopping area, South Freeport is car-dependent. Drivers usually use U.S. Route 1 to travel 4 miles northeast to Freeport’s core, while commuters merge onto the highway that creates the neighborhood's western border. Residents can drive 16 miles south on Interstate 295 to go to Portland, the most populated city in Maine, or drive 40 miles northeast on the same highway to get to the state capital of Augusta. The Greater Portland Metro bus system also has a park-and-ride lot on U.S. Route 1, where commuters can catch the Breez line, which has stops in Portland, Yarmouth, Freeport and Brunswick. Downtown Freeport also has a train station where locals may board Amtrak’s Downeaster line to go to Portland or Boston, Massachusetts. South Freeport has a CAP Index Crime score of 1 out of 10, which is the lowest possible score.Outlet shopping and seafood in Freeport
Most of the town’s most popular restaurants are in Downtown Freeport, but South Freeport also has some dining options. South Freeport Village Market is a cozy café selling coffee, pastries and sandwiches. Other choices are along State Route 1 and run the gamut from homestyle breakfast diners like Sunrise Café to casual seafood shacks like Cindy’s Lobster Rolls. Locals split small plates like charcuterie boards and soft pretzels at the Maine Beer Company, which has a large tap room with a modern, industrial vibe and a vast list of ales and lagers. For platters of lobster and clams with coastal views, diners head to Harraseeket Lunch and Lobster Company, a seasonal restaurant that’s usually open from April to mid-October.Residents can grab groceries from Shaw’s, a regional supermarket located a mile north of the neighborhood. Freeport is also known for its retail shopping, and locals can stock up on outdoor gear and see a 16-foot-tall boot at the L.L. Bean flagship campus, which sits in the heart of the Freeport Village Station. Coffee shops and seafood restaurants are sprinkled among popular retailers like Old Navy, Loft, Levi’s and Coach in the outdoor outlet mall.
