Niles
Suburban Neighborhood in Fremont, California
Alameda County 94536
Homes reflect creative spirit in the old and the new
All roads lead toward Niles Boulevard. Most streets are lined by sidewalks and shaded by live oaks, cypresses and pines. Along the way, homes take various shapes and sizes—an updated 1918 cottage, a contemporary ranch-style home, or a larger home in the Spanish Revival style with rustic detailing and a tile roof. The median home value is $1.5 million. Prices range from $1.2 million for small homes that need improvement to $2.3 million for a large, updated single-family home. A section of Niles has townhomes valued from around $800,000 for two-bedroom units to $1.2 million for larger, updated units.Historical community park and recreation destinations beckon
An upgrade to the California Nursery Historical Park off Niles Boulevard was completed in 2022. Paved walkways wind among boxed and fruit trees and a windmill provides a selfie spot on the site that was the state’s premier nursery in the first half of the 20th century. Niles Community Park, popular with dogs and their walkers, features ponds with fishing docks, tennis courts, and a path to the Alameda Creek Trail, which runs along the neighborhood's southern border. Quarry Lakes Regional Park sits to the west, offering fishing, hiking, swimming and boating. Rancho Arroyo Park is another green spot in the community, with playgrounds and views of the hills.Historic school and high ratings
Kids can start at Niles Elementary School, continue at Centerville Middle School, and finish at Washington High School. All three have A ratings on Niche. Established in 1892, Washington is Fremont's oldest comprehensive public high school.Museums and events celebrate history and build community
The Niles Essanay Museum anchors the community in its film history, screening silent films regularly and celebrating the town’s glory days as the setting of iconoclastic films like Charlie Chaplin’s “The Tramp.” The esteemed filmmaker is captured in a mural on the side of an oldtown building, and the museum hosts a 3-day silent film festival every summer featuring live pianist accompaniment. Railway museums note another foundational element of the town—its location as a stop on the first transcontinental railroad line in 1870. “It really feels like you’re going back in time,” says Omar Murillo, Realtor with Everhome Real Estate and a top producer in the region. The Hot August Niles Car Show features classic cars, and antique fairs frequently draw visitors. But Niles is not buried in the past—every Earth Day, the community gets out to clean up the streets and paint fences, and free concerts are held in the town plaza every second Saturday during the summer.Easy travel to Bay Area destinations
Interstate 238 runs through Niles, connecting it to Hayward to the north and to Interstate 680 for South Bay travel. There are several bus stops in the neighborhood, most along Niles Boulevard. The Union City BART station is just to the west. Washington Hospital is 3 miles away and San Jose International Airport is 20 miles south.Shops and eateries carry out the theme
A dozen or so antique stores mingle amongst bookstores, boutiques and music stores along Niles Boulevard. Cafés and diners embrace the old-time feel; Bronco Billy’s Pizza Palace pays homage to the silent Western “Bronco Billy,” filmed in Niles in 1913. Niles makes room for modern conveniences as well, with Mr. Mikey’s Country Store and Deli selling staples and sandwiches. A Safeway supermarket is four miles to the west of the town center.
