Christie is a small subdivision developed in the 1950s. Only about 200 homes and an eighth of a square mile, it puts residents near the three zoned public schools, allowing students to walk to school. Commons Park, which Fridley’s website describes as the most popular park in the city with fun winter and summer activities, is within a mile of every home.
Midcentury ranch-style houses are predominant, but there are a few split-level homes. Homes range from around 1,100 to 2,000 square feet and sell for around $290,000 to $390,000. “I sold a house there in 2023 and had dozens of showings,” says Taylor Matzoll, a sales associate with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. “Buyers were very impressed with how solid the house was. These ‘50s homes are just built really well. The house I sold had an extremely large lot – a little over a half-acre. It’s one of the best backyards you will find in a house under $500,000 in the Twin Cities.” Most properties are built on a quarter of an acre lot, with some reaching half an acre.
Students can walk right across Mississippi Street on the neighborhood's north side to Hayes Elementary School, earning a C-plus grade from Niche. Kids at Hayes can start taking International Baccalaureate courses through the Primary Years Programme. IB courses continue at Fridley Middle School, which is just across 63rd Street, earning a C Niche Grade. Fridley High School earns a B-minus grade and offers an IB Diploma.
Commons Park is no more than a half-mile walk from each home. The park is a popular year-round destination. During the warmer months, kids head to the playground and play sports on the many athletic fields. Come winter, people skate and play hockey on the two ice rinks. And when it snows, kids will bring their sleds. Between the ice rinks and the hill is a warming house to take a break from the cold weather. Winters in Fridley tend to average below-freezing temperatures and occasionally below 0 degrees.
The closest big-box retailers are about 3 miles away on Central Avenue. They include Target, Menards and Aldi. Smoky’s Grill is known for its halal food, including smash burgers. Other options include Korean food at Kings Restaurant and Shortstop, where people can enjoy bar food, watch sports and play bingo on Sunday.
Christie is right between Minnesota Highways 47 and 65, both of which run less than 10 miles south to Central Minneapolis. There’s also a Metro Transit station about 3 miles away, where commuters can hop on the Northstar Line for a 20-minute train ride into the city. The Blue Line starts downtown and runs south to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, which takes about 23 minutes.
