The neighborhood of Rice Creek Terrace East, in the north Minneapolis suburb of Fridley, is south of its namesake waterway. Residents are not far from recreation opportunities as Fridley is home to nearly 40 parks and trails that follow the water. “Just being able to take advantage of the river and the trail system is one of the best things about living here,” says Joel Friday, a Realtor with Keller Williams Classic Realty, who grew up in Fridley. “You can live anywhere, but if you can ride your bike 20 miles in any direction, that’s kind of cool, too.” The trail close to the neighborhood hooks up with another one that follows the Mississippi River into Minneapolis. The neighborhood is two miles from Interstate 694, 10 miles from downtown Minneapolis and 16 miles from St. Paul.

Fridley has an abundance of parks
With the number of parks in Fridley, it’s typical for each neighborhood to have public recreation space. At nearly 10 acres, Meadowlands Park has a walking and biking trail, playground and picnic areas. Improvements planned for Meadowlands over the next few years include a basketball court, an ADA-compliant playground and a small parking lot to accommodate more visitors. Locke County Park is located north of the neighborhood, totaling nearly 100 acres. The highlight is the Rice Creek West Regional Trail. The path is popular for wildlife viewing and fishing along its four miles. The park also has an enclosed dog play area. “We don’t have anything fancy like Minneapolis or St. Paul,” says Mike Maher, Fridley's parks and recreation director. “We do things on a smaller scale, but people generally support the parks and care about what’s in them.”

Shortstop Fridley is a sports bar that hosts trivia games on Wednesdays and bingo throughout the week. Kings Restaurant specializes in Korean food made with locally sourced ingredients. Crooners Supper Club is open Wednesday through Sunday. The dinner-and-a-show venue features big bands, jazz, blues and even comedy performances. Big-box stores like Target, Menards and Petco are near the highway. Grocery store options are Cub Foods and Hy-Vee. Northtown Mall is four miles north in the neighboring suburb of Blaine. There are 100 stores, and Hobby Lobby and Best Buy Outlet serve as two of the six anchors.

International Baccalaureate Program in Fridley Schools
The elementary, middle and high schools are all close to the neighborhood. Hayes Elementary is rated a C-plus on Niche, and students attend through fourth grade. Fifth through eighth graders attend Fridley Middle, rated a C. Fridley High School is rated a B-minus. All three schools have International Baccalaureate programs that present students with a challenging curriculum that prepares them for a global experience in the workforce.

Metro Transit buses on University and Central Avenues
Route 10 of the Metro Transit bus system runs north and south through Fridley on University Avenue and Central Avenue. There are stops on both roads at the intersection of Mississippi Street. The Fridley Northstar commuter rail station is 2 miles away, providing a 10-minute ride to Target Field in downtown Minneapolis, home of the Minnesota Twins baseball team. The last train of the day arrives from downtown at around 7 p.m., meaning trains are unavailable after nighttime downtown events. The last train heading south to downtown stops at around 5:15 at the Fridley station.
