New modern subdivisions with xeriscape lawnss
Fruita was once full of farmland but has evolved as commercial developments have sprouted up to accommodate an increasing population. The Iron Wheel community is a subdivision with three-bedroom contemporary homes on xeriscape lots. The Palmer subdivision currently includes 26 one-acre lots with modern ranch-style homes still being built. “We do like the Fruita Area, and we wanted at least an acre of land,” says Knight, who is building a personal residence in the Palmer community. Home prices range from $350,000 to $850,000. A three-bedroom ranch-style home typically costs between $350,000 and $700,000, while a newer four-bedroom home can cost between $500,000 and $850,000.Biking on the monument, skiing in the alpine mountains or paddleboarding at Snooks Bottom
Fruita is a hub for mountain biking in the Grand Valley. “We were riding our bikes in high school,” says Knight. “This wasn’t known as a mountain biking mecca back then - it was just something we did. In the last 20 years, we’ve started promoting it as one of our best resources.” Lunch Loop Trail is one of the valley’s most renowned mountain biking areas, with a dirt track winding through the banks of the Colorado National Monument. With 20,500 acres of wilderness, the National Monument is perhaps Fruita’s greatest attraction, with hiking, biking and stunning views of the valley from natural desert canyons. The Colorado Riverfront Trail follows the river from Loma to Palisade for 22 miles. Devil’s Canyon is a dog-friendly hiking path through a red-rock desert with bridle trails for horseback riding. Biking north on 18 Road leads to an expansive network of open space with gravel roads and a hilly park with ramps to jump. Amateurs can practice riding the dunes of the Fruita Bike Park before setting out toward the mountains. The Powderhorn Mountain Resort has a system of cross-country skiing trails in the alpine forests of the Grand Mesa, another nearby mountain range.Fruita also includes community parks like the Snooks Bottom Open Space area, which provides a lake for paddleboarding, fishing or swimming. The James M. Robb—Colorado River State Park has campgrounds and RV areas by the Colorado River. The Little Salt Wash Sports Park, which has another bike park, offers a nine-hole disc golf course, a playground, soccer fields and baseball diamonds. The Adobe Creek National Golf Course has 27 holes on lush fairways with a view of the Monument.

Fruita Monument High School earns a B and has over 45 extracurricular activities, including artistic design classes and a welding program.Fall Festivals, farmers markets and Mike the Headless Chicken
Mike the Headless Chicken Festival is a trendy event in Downtown Fruita with beer gardens, a car show and live music to celebrate the life of a chicken that lived for 18 months without a head. Many community events happen at Civic Center Park, like the Fruita Fall Festival, with a parade, cornhole tournament and a baking contest. Fruita’s Farmers & Makers Market kicks off each Saturday morning through October, with businesses selling produce and artwork while local musicians perform on stage at Civic Center Park.I-70 to Grand Junction Regional Airport
Fruita is a car-dependent neighborhood with little access to other forms of transportation. Interstate 70 is Fruita’s primary expressway leading east 12 miles to Grand Junction or 24 miles to Palisade. The Grand Valley Transit (GVT) bus makes 10 stops in Fruita, including four on Aspen Avenue. Fruita is located between Denver and Salt Lake City, each over 250 miles away. The Grand Junction Regional Airport is 13 miles east, and it makes connecting flights to the Denver International Airport, which provides air travel to worldwide destinations.Downtown, dinosaurs and diners
Quirky sculptures like a headless chicken or a dinosaur riding a bike make up the art scene in Downtown Fruita. In this modest town center, restaurants, breweries and outdoor sports shops line Aspen Avenue. In the 1990s, the owners of Over the Edge Sports, a mountain bike and accessories store, opened their doors in an abandoned building. Today, Over the Edge Sports has locations worldwide, with stores in Mexico and Australia. Fruita also features restaurants like Camilla’s Kaffe, a diner with southwest-inspired breakfast items and vintage posters on the walls. Hot Tomato Pizza is an iconic Fruita establishment with an industrial interior, microbrews and patio seating. For groceries, Skips Farm to Market offers organic produce, homemade meals and a deli, while City Market is Fruita’s primary supermarket on Plum Street.Dinosaurs used to roam the land
The Dinosaur Journey Museum displays information about species like the Stegosaurus and Brachiosaurus, which roamed western Colorado and were found fossilized in Fruita during the 1900s. "We have quite the history of dinosaurs you wouldn't expect over here,” says Judy Smith, the Director of Operations for the Grand Junction Area Realtor Association.
