Fulton and Maple Lawn's brand-new homes and bustling shopping center

Surrounded by suburban neighborhoods and the rolling farmlands of Howard County, Fulton is a growing town located between Baltimore and D.C., just minutes from Clarksville and Ellicott City. “Fulton has an upcoming new community called Maple Lawn that offers urban living with a suburban appeal,” says Michelle Boucher, a Realtor with Keller Williams Lucido Agency who hosts a Dinner & Downsizing event every year for homeowners looking to live more simply. “You’ve got everything from newer construction, million-dollar homes and four-story townhomes with elevators to older ranchers that mark the original Fulton neighborhoods. Residents here walk to dinner, to coffee, and to the bar, where they can hear live music. There are exceptional restaurants and a mix of office buildings, so working here is also a plus. Shopping is all in one area with a major church right across the street, so people get outside and really meet other people.”

Many Fulton residents are professionals looking to live in a large residential community with access to major highways like Interstate 95. Johns Hopkins APL is located here, and NSA is minutes away. Families enjoy the highly rated public and private schools and county parks, and with dozens of restaurants and shops in the Maple Lawn district, locals don’t have to leave. Fulton proper is more quiet and rural, so Maple Lawn feels like a tiny metropolis in Howard County. The CAP Index Score for Fulton is 2 out of 10, which is significantly lower than the national average of 4.

Dog parks, playgrounds and walking trails throughout Maple Lawn

Because Maple Lawn is a planned community, there are several manicured parks, green spaces and sports fields available for residents and visitors. Maple Lawn Park is a small space surrounded by homes, with an extensive playground and picnic area. Down the road is the private and fenced-in Maple Lawn Dog Park. It also has trails that wind through the trees, perfect for those who enjoy jogging or walking their pets in nature. Westside Park is a wider playscape for both kids and adults, with a big grassy field, tennis courts, a basketball court and a playground. The Maple Lawn Community Center is a gathering space for many people who live here. They can take advantage of the center's large swimming pool, playground and sports courts. Behind the center is Midtown Park, which has a large multi-use field.

Outside of Maple Lawn, Schooley Mill Park has a pond, picnic areas, and a few walking trails through pockets of forest. It’s also home to the James Marlow House historic landmark. Schooley Mill Park also has an arena and barn for those training for or competing in equestrian events.

Maple Lawn community events and festivals

The Maple Lawn Community Center also hosts seasonal events like concerts, markets and food festivals. From May through November, the center hosts the area's farmers market in the West Boulevard parking lot, where people can shop for produce from local farms or crafts made by artists and vendors. The Maple Lawn Street Festival is a July event with live music, games, food and a fireworks show. The Maple Lawn Autumn Harvest Music Festival in October is exactly what it sounds like: pumpkins, live music, food vendors and plenty of drinks. The community also hosts several marathons and half-marathons throughout the year, and there is even an annual Bike to Work Day event on Maple Lawn Boulevard.

Locally owned shops and businesses in Maple Lawn

Maple Lawn Boulevard is the area’s major shopping and dining hub. It is surrounded by townhouses and a few green spaces, creating that courtyard feeling of a small pedestrian city. “Maple Lawn is a high-end, sort of self-sufficient community that has everything you need all in one place,” Boucher says. “Fulton proper still offers the rural environment that’s just minutes from the hubbub of the shopping area and main highways to DC and Baltimore.”

There is a wide assortment of bars and restaurants just outside most residents' doors. Ten Oaks Tavern is a popular gastropub with craft pours and pub food, and Lib’s Grill has live music and a variety of seafood, pasta and steaks. Sidamo Coffee and Tea sits alongside a clothing boutique and a butcher shop, while doctor’s offices, retail stores and real estate agencies occupy nearby office space. Decadent is a bakery and gelato shop near Patapsco Bicycles and Cookie Cutters, a hair salon for kids. There are major chain stores in the area including a Food Lion, Harris Teeter, and CVS, as well as a few smaller markets and delis.

Four-story townhouses and Second Empire-inspired homes

Though the yards in Fulton may be small, the houses certainly are not; many are upwards of 4,000 square feet. Homes near Lager Boulevard, in particular, include a garage out back to accommodate two or more cars. The houses themselves are Colonial and Second Empire-inspired with classical elements, including columned front porches, dangling chandeliers, attic bedrooms and huge open floorplans with hardwood floors. Though many are similar models from the same designer, they often have unique features, such as brick, stone or vinyl exterior facades. The streets are densely populated, and only small, grassy strips offer separation. Single-family homes in Fulton commonly cost between $1 and $2 million.

The occasional single-story Cape Cod or ranch-style home dates back to the 1950s and can cost between $500,000 and $700,000. These homes are found in small neighborhoods like the ones on Queen Street or Scaggsville Road.

Four-story attached townhouses in Maple Lawn often have three or more bedrooms, modern appliances, garages out back, in-unit laundry, and balconies overlooking grassy lawns or neighboring units. Most cost between $700,000 and $1.2 million. There is also a very small selection of townhouses in the Villas at Maple Lawn 55 and older community, which cost between $800,000 and $950,000.

“Many people who live here are career professionals in the medical field, government contractors, engineers, corporate executives; these are folks that come from all over, which makes this area a really diverse community,” Boucher says.
