Suburban Heights
Landscape yards, traffic circles and a neighborhood watch
Traffic circles, speed bumps and the occasional Little Library are positioned along the residential streets. Many yards have trimmed hedges as well as driveways leading to front doors and attached garages. "We have a yard of the month. People vote on it, which is cute," Pepine says. In the afternoon, residents are seen walking their dogs and riding bicycles along the roads. Homes include midcentury brick and concrete ranch-styles as well as two-story homes with colonial influences. Some houses have a natural privacy screen of oaks, pines and palms. Locals tend to know their neighbors and connect online through a private Facebook group. "We have a neighborhood watch committee, and you're notified when someone is soliciting in our neighborhood," Pepine says. "We have a no solicitation rule." Average home prices in the community are slightly higher than in the rest of the metro area. Houses under 2,000 square feet often range in price from $250,000 to $450,000, while larger residences range between $400,000 and $600,000.Students can enroll in gifted and magnet programs
Some Gainesville residents move to the neighborhood to be closer to the public schools. "We are zoned for excellent schools, so that's a big draw to Suburban Heights," Pepine says. "We get people moving from the southwest side of Gainesville to the northwest because they don't want to deal with all the traffic." Littlewood Elementary has a B-plus grade from Niche and is undergoing major renovations; the facility will open on 34th Street when construction is complete. In the meantime, students will attend classes next to Westwood Middle. Sixth to eighth graders can attend Fort Clarke Middle, offering a gifted program with advanced course options and independent research projects. The middle school is unrated by Niche. F.W. Buchholz High has an A, and earns the No. 4 spot for best public high schools in the county. High schoolers in the magnet program can choose between the Academy of Entrepreneurship or Finance.Close to Newberry Road and I-75
Suburban Heights is less than a mile from Newberry Road, which becomes University Avenue. The route leads to the University of Florida, about 3 miles away, and downtown, around 5 miles to the east. Gainesville's public bus system offers stops along Newberry Road. UF Health Shands is 5 miles away, on Archer Road, but locals should expect heavy traffic during rush hours. The nearest Interstate 75 interchange is located 2 miles from the center of Suburban Heights.A geological wonder in Gainesville
Less than 5 miles away awaits Devil's Millhopper Geological Site, a unique sinkhole known for its rainforest-like climate. Visitors take a winding staircase to the bottom, where water trickles into a large pit. According to local legend, the site was a trap made by underworld forces. However, the formation originated from a deep limestone collapse. "We think it formed about 10,000 years ago," says Scott Cody, a park volunteer. "I suggest that you keep moving down towards the water. Don't stop, because if you do, you'll get bit by mosquitos and yellow flies. You should bring your bug spray!" Closer to home is Cofrin Natural Park, just south of the community. The park has tennis courts, a playground and a memorial garden. "We are also close to San Felasco Park, which is the state park with mountain biking trails, running trails and hiking," Pepine says. "It's an incredible resource right down the road." Pepine also suggests Gainesville Health and Fitness, a popular membership gym in the city. "That's a half a mile from Suburban Heights, so people love to bike or walk to the gym," she says.Shopping at the Marketplace at Thornebrook
The Marketplace at Thornebrook contains the only Fresh Market grocery store in Gainesville. Next door is Uppercrust, a community bakery with a wide selection of freshly baked treats, hand-selected wines and locally sourced artisan goods. The bakery tends to get busy on Fridays and UF game days. This side of the city leans more toward mom-and-pop restaurants than national chains. Pepine suggests family-owned spots like Cintrón, a self-proclaimed Floribbean restaurant and Mildred's Big City Food. Leonardo's Pizza of Millhopper has served Chicago-style pies and pasta since the 1970s.Events in the community and Shoppes at Thronebrook
The homeowners association holds several events for residents throughout the year. "Suburban Heights has ice cream socials, yard sales, potlucks and a Halloween parade," Pepine says. For over 40 years, the Shoppes at Thronebrook has hosted the Fall Arts Festival in September. Spring Arts Festival, held in May, is a recent addition to the retail hub's event calendar.
