Sugarfoot
A quiet community in Gainesville
Sugarfoot includes the subdivisions of Englewood, Fletcher Heights, Anglewood, Gwynn Oaks and Holly Forest. Along the roadways are speed bumps, clusters of mailboxes and homes from the 1950s to the 1970s. The area features ranch-style homes and a few split levels with midcentury modern influences. Most residences have attached garages, concrete walkways, and front yards shaded by oaks and palm trees. Sturdy concrete block homes from the 20th century often enter the market with original hardwood or terrazzo floors. The community also contains lots that are over an acre in size. Generally, home prices range between $375,000 and $500,000. Pepine says that the prices are lower than in the nearby communities, like Suburban Heights. Some Sugarfoot homes are located within a floodplain according to FEMA maps, which may impact insurance rates.Upgrades to Littlewood Elementary School
Littlewood Elementary offers an extended day enrichment program and has a B-plus grade from Niche. The school is undergoing major renovations, and students attend classes next to Westwood Middle. The middle school accepts sixth to eighth graders and earns a B-plus. Middle schoolers may participate in the technology program that offers coding, robotics and 3D design courses. Gainesville High has earned an A and is ranked as the No. 3 best high school in Alachua County. The school provides dual enrollment courses with the University of Florida and Santa Fe College.Spending time at Green Acres Park
The neighborhood is nearly surrounded by nature. John Mahon Nature Park is located to the north, while the 79-acre Green Acres Park is to the south. Green Acres Park has outdoor exercise equipment for adults and a toddler sand pit with a collection of shared toys. "You have trails and a community garden where people have plots," Pepine says. These outdoor spaces are considered local hidden gems that many residents have yet to stumble across. "People don't realize the park and the trails are there," Pepine says. "You can go all the way to the Oaks Mall on those trails. But you got to be careful because there are gators back there!" To the west of the private of Clear Lake is the Sugarfoot Prairie Conservation Area. Clear Lake Nature Park, located on the outskirts of the conservation area, is only accessible by foot. The park features hiking and biking trails that lead through ancient woodlands of oaks. The Mark Bostick Golf Course is hidden behind vibrant murals painted along the 34th Street Wall. The members-only, par 70 course is open to University of Florida students, faculty and alumni.Taking to Royal Park Plaza or Westgate Regency Shopping Center
Close to Sugarfoot are a mix of local shops and eateries as well as national storefronts. "You are right across from Newberry Road, which has Royal Park Plaza shopping center," Pepine says. "There's the movie theaters, a coffee shop, FedEx and Cold Stone Creamery. The Westgate Regency Shopping Center is at the corner of University Avenue and 34th Street. The retail center has a Publix Super Market, Ace Hardware, and the local dining spot, Mildred's Big City Food. "Mildred's is definitely a staple here in Gainesville," says Sophie Barnes, a Mildred's server. "We have three-course meals, but you can also order al la carte." The bistro-style restaurant has intimate indoor and outdoor seating with an elevated menu featuring local ingredients. 108 Vine, a popular gift shop, has a craft espresso bar, books and a list of handmade gifts made by local artists. The shop often hosts pop-up bakeries and night markets with vintage clothing. Some locals are members of the popular neighborhood gym. "Gainesville Health and Fitness is an unbelievable gym that was founded by a longtime resident," Pepine says, who is also a gym member. "To have that resource, that's not a chain, in our town is incredible." The fitness center offers an Olympic-sized pools, a sauna and a smoothie bar.Close to UF and major roads
Sugarfoot sits near major thoroughfares in the city, with Newberry Road splitting into University Avenue, which intersects SW 34th Street. Gainesville has a robust public transportation system, and bus stops are found along Newberry Road. However, many locals in the northern side of the community can reach parks and nearby shopping centers on foot or bike. "There retirees who live here, and they can walk everywhere," Pepine says. "That's hard to find these days." The community sits between two medical facilities, UF Health Shands and HCA North Florida Hospital, about 3 miles away. University students and faculty can reach the western edge of campus within 2 miles.
